Hair Transplantation - Frequently Asked Questions
2
  • What is it?
  • Hair transplant surgery is a procedure performed
under local anaesthetic with minor sedation,
where small, naturally-occurring groups of hairs
(follicular units grafts), are taken from the
back of the scalp (the area where the hairs have
naturally lower levels of DHT) and replanting the
graft in the areas of thinning or balding. Grafts
either have one, two or three hairs in them, in
their natural groupings. Depending on how bald or
thinning a person's hair is determines how many
grafts will be needed. As the hairs are taken in
their natural groupings the results of a hair
transplant is undetectable and looks completely
    natural.
  • How does it work?
  • A hair transplant only works by using a person's
own hair so it is impossible for it to be
rejected. The best way to understand the concept
of hair a transplant is to think of it as you
would a garden, taking the plants from the back
garden and replanting them into the front garden,
where they grow the same way they would have
previously. The replanted hair is 'permanent
hair' and can be treated exactly the same way as
the rest of your hair. The hair can be
    straightened, dyed, curled and styled.

  • What is FUT?
  • FUT, Follicular unit transfer, is the most
popular method of hair transplantation. The way
it works is by taking a strip of hair from the
back of the scalp (the strip method) this is then
stitched up with a special type of closure that
allows the hair to grow back through the thin
scar and make it completely undetectable and the
grafts (small skin graft of naturally occurring
groups of hairs) are then cut from the strip of
skin and replanted in the area/s of thinning or
    balding.
  • The skill of the surgeon plays heavily on the
results, as careful planting of the grafts and
hairline planning must be made to ensure that the
resulting hair looks natural and grows in the
right direction as well as matching up with the
    original hairline and hair growth.

  • What is FUE?
  • FUE, follicular unit extraction is a newer method
of hair transplantation that uses a type of hole
punch to take out the hair grafts from the back
of the scalp. Therefore planting of the graft is
exactly the same as FUT. Follicular unit
extraction has gained popularity for use in small
cases of hair loss, like for eyebrows or
    concealing scars.
  • FUE has often been referred to as scar less
surgery. It should be noted that this is
incorrect. With FUE you are left with many punch
hole scars as opposed to FUT where you are left
with one fine hairline scar concealed at the back
of the scalp. For areas of thinning or balding,
FUT is still the premier method of hair
    transplantation.
  • Transplants for scars or burns?
  • FUT or FUE can be used to successfully cover or
camouflage any type of scars or burns on the
scalp or face. FUT or FUE is often used to cover
scars around the hairline from previous surgery,
beard or eyebrow scars or any type of burns in
    both men and women.

  • How many grafts do I need?
  • The doctor will discuss your expectations in your
consultation with him and work out how many
grafts are needed to meet your expectations. Hair
transplants can involve as few as 300 grafts for
eyebrows or from 500 grafts to 3000 grafts for
thinning or balding hair. Sometimes more than one
procedure may be required to meet the density of
the hair expected by the patient. Click here to

    changed in 12 years!
  • Can you lower a hairline?
  • Hair transplantation is an excellent way of
lowering a high inherited hairline. The same FUT
method is used and all the hair is planted in the
hairline area. As the hair is not thinning,
matching the density of the existing hairline can
sometimes require more than one procedure.

  • What happens after my hair transplant?
  • Hair transplant surgery is a walk in walk out
procedure, performed in one day. There is no real
downtime and you leave the clinic without
bandages. The day after the procedure small
crusts will appear on the grafts and these will
gradually shed between 7 to 10 days after your
procedure. It is normal for some of the hairs in
the grafts to shed completely and then start
growing again as normal on your next hair cycle,
between 6 to 15 weeks. Hairs grow at a slow rate
of 1 cm per month so visual results start to
appear between 6 - 8 months and then full results
are visible at 12 months. Hair transplantation is
extremely successful and more than 90 of the
hairs will survive the transplant. At the Knudsen
Clinic we guarantee our hair transplant results.
  • I see so much hair in my brush, am I going bald?
  • A normal, healthy person, on average, loses 50
-150 hairs from their scalp a day. Hair loss only
becomes an issue when the hairs that are lost
grow back to be replaced by miniaturised hair.
Miniaturised hair is what leads to balding.
