Title: COMPOUND NOUNS AND ADJECTIVES

1
  • What's a Compound Adjective?
  • A single adjective made up of two or more words
is called a compound adjective. The words in a
compound adjective can be linked together by a
hyphen (or hyphens) to show they are part of the
same adjective. In the UK, your readers will
expect you to use hyphens in compound
adjectives.Americans are more lenient. The US
ruling is Use a hyphen if it eliminates
ambiguity or helps your reader, else don't
bother. If you're unsure, use hyphens. You won't
be marked down for using hyphens. Read more at

Hyphens Used in Compound Nouns
  • http//www.grammar-monster.com/punctuation/using_h
    yphens.htm
  • A single noun made up of two or more words is
called a compound noun (e.g., ice axe,
water-bottle, inkwell). The big question with a
compound noun is whether to leave it as two words
(e.g., ice axe), to put a hyphen between the
words (e.g., water-bottle), or to create a new
    word (e.g., inkwell).
  • Unfortunately, there is no simple rule for this.
You have to know how to spell the word.
Occasionally, more than one version of the word
is acceptable (e.g., paper clip, paper-clip, and
    paperclip are all acceptable).

The Hyphen Might Be Essential
  • Sometimes a hyphen is essential to avoid
ambiguity. Look at these examples a
    heavy-metal detector
  • a heavy metal detector Then putting heavy
metal detector would be wrong in the UK and the
    US.

detects heavy metals.
detects metal, and it is heavy.
4
Compound Adjectives with Numbers
  • The easiest compound adjectives to spot are the
    ones which include numbers.ExamplesTwo-seater
