Silk Brocade Fabric Gets a Contemporary Look
2
Brocade is a class of lavishly decorative
shuttle-woven fabrics. Primarily woven from silk,
Silk Brocade Fabric is found in colored material
of silk, sometimes with or without gold and
silver threads woven into beautiful patterns. It
is sometimes made from a blend of synthetic and
silk. It is derived from the Italian word
broccare which means "to set with nails" or just
a projection or embossing.
3
These days, silk brocade fabrics are used largely
for draperies and upholstery. It's not uncommon
to use this fabric for formal wear, costumes and
vestments. In the Indian context, they are also
used for wedding wear, both for the bride and
groom. Earlier, silken brocade used to be studded
with precious and semi-precious stones but this
has now been replaced with sequins and beading
that glitter and have an aura all their own.
4
In modern times, brocade fabrics are woven on
Jacquard looms that are capable of creating
complex designs resembling tapestry, with the
Jacquard technique. These brocade fabrics look
like conventional tapestry and are even
advertised as such, but they are really a far cry
from tapestry. If you're looking for modern-day
brocade fabric, you'll be surprised to see some
of them with Funky Fabric Prints.
