Title: In Vitro Fertilization
1In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
2In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- Many couples suffer from infertility, and are not
able to achieve pregnancy, for these persons ICSI
cycle IVF and ART (Assisted Reproductive
Techniques) will help to improve the chance for
pregnancy. - These procedures have excellent success rates and
achieve much desired pregnancy.
3In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- IVF might be used to overcome infertility in the
woman due to problems of the fallopian tube,
which makes fertilization in vivo difficult. - It also assist in male infertility where there
is a deficiency in sperm quality and in such
cases Intra Cytoplasm Sperm Injection(ICSI) may
be used, where a sperm cell is injected directly
into the egg cell.
4In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- ICSI also used when sperm numbers are very low.
- If no sperm is available in a natural way, then
embryologist may schedule a sperm retrieval
process such as micro dissection, testicular
biopsy, testicular sperm extraction (TESA) or
percutaneous sperm aspirations (PESA) about the
time of egg retrieval.
5In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- Ovarian stimulation
- Fertility drugs, taken through injections are
used to stimulate a womans ovaries to develop
multiple mature eggs. - This is because a normal cycle usually produces
one egg only and pregnancy rates in IVF are
better if a number of eggs can be retrieved and
fertilized.
6In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- These injections are usually given subcutaneously
(under the skin) and are much less uncomfortable
than the previous generations of medication. - The embryologist monitors the progress of
ovulation induction with ultrasounds and blood
estrogen levels over several days.
7In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- Egg retrieval
- When eggs are mature, they are retrieved by an
ultrasound guided procedure that is performed
under light anesthesia on an outpatient basis. - During the process a needle is placed through the
vaginal and into the ovaries and removes the
fluid that contains the egg..
8In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- This process is performed by visualizing the
follicle with a vaginal ultrasound probe. A
needle is directed alongside the probe through
the vaginal wall and into the ovary. - To avoid any discomfort, strong, short acting
intravenous sedation is provided
9In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- Fertilization
- Once the fluid is removed from the follicle, eggs
are placed in incubator in the lab. The eggs
should be fertilized with sperm in the same day. - Now provide a semen sample from male partner
which is healthiest sperm will be extracted.
10In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- The eggs are fertilized by ICSI (Intra
Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) which is most
commonly recommended as part of the IVF
process when there is a problem with the sperm or
egg, including sperm low motility, low sperm
count or abnormally shaped sperm. - It takes approximately 18 hours to determine if
fertilization occurs and 24 72 hours to
establish the growth of embryo.
11In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- Embryo Transfer
- Embryos are transferred within 3 to 6 days after
egg retrieval. - It is recommended to grow the embryos for five to
six days until they reach the blastocyst stage. - Embryo transfer is a simple technique and
anesthesia is not required.
12In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- They are placed through cervix into the uterine
cavity using a small soft catheter. - Embryo Cryopreservation Sometimes during the IVF
procedure extra embryos develop during the cycle.
- If the embryos are of good quality, then they can
be frozen and stored for future transfer.
