Title: I'm Here

Genre of the film
Im here is a hybrid genre of Sci-Fi and Romance.
This is shown through the representation of the
two lead characters, both a female and male robot
that are trying to survive together in a world
controlled by mankind. The short films
poster also has connotations similar to that of a
full feature romance films poster. It has both
the characters sat together like a romance
poster. However, we can clearly see that both
subjects are robots which gives us the impression
that its also going to be partly sci-fi.

Representation
Im here portrays a word where robots are
segregated and shunned upon by humans. In many
ways it is similar to our own society. One of
the key signifiers where the film is represented
to be like ours is in the opening scene, where a
robot is shown with his lower half missing after
a car collision.  Despite still being alive, it
looks around helplessly in pain but nobody around
is offering any help.  In fact, a policeman
appears annoyed at having tripped over him. Its
as though hes a burden to the world and
suggests a rejection from society. The scene
shows a clear divide in the society just like
there are/were divides in our world such as
segregation, sexism, and homophobia.

Is it a happy world?
The aim of this film wasnt to present a happy
world, it was aiming to create the image of a
realistic world. I think Spike Jonze has created
a world similar to ours, accurately representing
that life isnt always how you expect it to be
and that sometimes you have to sacrifice things.
This is represented through Sheldon sacrificing
his limbs for Francesca because she was suffering
and he loved her. The robots are seen as an
inferior race the humans are the race that rule
and decided the limits within the robots lives.
Their lives appear to be a burden to that of the
human race. Theres a scene in the short film
where Francesca and Sheldon go to a concert,
whilst there Francesca looses an arm but non of
the humans surrounding them would help and they
wouldnt move to let her leave the room. Humans
are ignorant to their existence. Although the
humans wouldnt support them, Sheldon helps her
again and giver he his arm to replace hers. This
shows that Sheldon expresses human emotions more
than they do themselves. Hes making the most of
what he has in order to be happy.
5
Evidence of prejudice
Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not
based on reason or actual experience. In this
short film prejudice is present in the scene
where the older lady treats Francesca and Sheldon
like they are lesser beings because their kind
should not be driving a car. She discriminates
against them because they dont appear to be like
her but they actually convey emotions just like a
human. This is similar to our society, if
youre a little against the norm you are judged
and separated from the rest of the population. In
our society the Elderly are seen as fusspots and
knowledgeable but they are stuck in their ways
and often dont agree with the youth/ younger
generations. This can also be said for the short
film as the elderly woman may have though her
opinion was correct and that the youths(the
young/middle ages robots) are rebellious and
cause trouble.
6
Sheldon
The film is very much carried by the
aforementioned protagonist, who is immediately
established as a caring, kind hearted soul.  He
continues to display compassion and devotion
throughout the film. Since the beginning it
appeared to me that Sheldon was a lonely and shy
character that felt comfortable by himself and
wasnt too fussed on interactions with humans or
having relationships of any kind. Living a simple
life was ok for him.
7
Francesca
Francesca is Sheldon's love interest who gave him
an opportunity to change and experience new
things in life. To Sheldon she is the girl that
helped him to develop human connections and
feeling which is shown when he tells her he can
dream thanks to her. However, to other characters
such as the elderly woman Francesca represents an
attitude of rebellion and is a disturbance to the
people as she's driving a car whilst listening to
loud music. Shes carefree and living in the
moment.
8
Love, friendship loyalty
I think these themes follow throughout the film
but they fit a certain order. At the start of the
short film, Sheldon and Francesca become friends
which is the basis of socialising and was
uncomfortable for Sheldon at first, it seems
like he feels awkward in the car scene when he
is surrounded by people but then his feeling
develop into love. His loyalty then becomes
apparent afterwards, which is shown with the
final scene of him sacrificing everything for
love.

How would you summarise the narrative?
The robots in the short film Im here are
protagonists and the humans are antagonists. This
isnt stereotypical to a sci-fi narrative as its
usually the opposite way around. Sheldon has a
longing for excitement, things are happening
around him, not to him. Francesca represents an
attitude of anti- establishment, she's driving a
car, listening to loud music, carefree and living
in the moment. The attraction is natural, which
is part of the stirring of the plot boy meets
girl who is everything that he isn't, boy is
willing to give up everything for said girl.
Im here follows the Tordorov typical narrative
structure of Equilibrium, Disequilibrium,
Resolution/New Equilibrium. I think the end of
the narrative has a solid resolution, it
symbolised Sheldon's final sacrifice for
Francesca. He gave her his complete body (expect
his head) in order for her to survive and in
return Francesca is his eternal caretaker which
is shown through the way shes holding him
lovingly whilst leaving the hospital.

Audience and Viewing
Despite the fact that Im here is a hybrid genre
of Science-fiction and Romance, the target
audience is not specifically aimed at the Sci-Fi
fans. Instead, the film appeals more so to
romance film viewers.
Im Here is most likely viewed on YouTube because
this is the platform Absolut Vodka wanted to use
in re-creating the cinema experience online for
people. However, Its also highly likely that
the Short film is or has been played at film
festivals such as the Sundance Short Film
Festival. These kind of festivals are for
initial showings which are to a select audience.
11
Why does Absolut Vodka sponsor the film?
I think Absolut Vodka was chosen to sponsor this
production for mutual benefits. They both benefit
from advertising with each other, the production
side benefits because their audience will broaden
as its recognised by the older audiences that
purchase Absolut Vodka. The sponsor will also
benefit because they will be associated and
recognised by the viewers of the short film.
Absolut Vodka collaborated with Spike Jonze to
bring Im Here to a  global audience by
re-creating the cinema experience online, by
limiting the amount of (tickets) viewings to
20,000 per day and linking into social media so
the film can be watched online with friends. The
poster uses the pun/slogan A love story in an
Absolut World to reference back to their
sponsors Absolut Vodka.
