1Art Cruises 2016
Discover Europes Painted Past
2A Rich Artistic History
- AmaWaterways art cruises are a chance for
travelers to visit important European cultural
sites and see some of the greatest masterpieces
up close and personal, as well as try their hand
at their own creations. Heres a preview of just
some of the artists and works that our passengers
may get a chance to learn about, or even see in
person, on one of our 2016 art cruises.
3Camaret, marÉe basse dans la rade by Eugène Boudin
Eugène Boudin may not be one of the most
well-known European artists, but his legacy
inspired many of the great artists that followed,
namely Claude Monet.
One of the first European landscape painters,
Boudin focused on painting the sea and other
maritime subjects. Fellow landscape painter
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot referred to Boudin as
the King of the skies.
4Portrait of Paul CÉzanne by Camille Pissaro
- Pissaro was one of the most important influences
on late 19th century and early 20th century art.
He began his career as a member of the
Impressionist school and was the only artist to
have his work displayed at all eight Paris
Impressionist Exhibitions in the late 1800s. In
his later works, he also dabbled in what would
become known as post-Impressionism and served as
a father figure to the major artists of that
latter movement such as Paul Cezanne, the subject
of this portrait.
5Portrait of Édouard Manet by Carolus-Duran
- Carolus-Duran, real name Charles Auguste Émile
Durand, made his name as a portrait artist whose
stylish and vivid paintings recreated high
society life in Frances Third Republic. Perhaps
more importantly, he was also one of the most
sought-after art instructors of his day and
taught many of the most talented young painters
of the time how to hone their skills.
6 Le Bassin aux Nymphéas, harmonie verte by Claude
Monet
- Impressionism transformed European art in the
late 19th century, and Claude Monet was the
movements shining light. His iconic and distinct
renderings captured natural landscapes and people
engaged in leisure activities in a way that was
groundbreaking at the time, and his philosophy of
using paint and canvas to recreate the experience
of perceiving nature was a forerunner to 20th
century Modernism.

7La Grenouillère by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Like Pissaro and Monet, Renoir was a member of
the Impressionist school of art. His paintings
were noted for being especially vibrant and
lively, and for the way they
- portrayed the human form. Along with Monet,
Pissaro, and other Impressionists, Renoir helped
launch the Impressionist exhibits that took the
art world by storm after the traditional art
schools of the day rejected his and his
compatriots work.
