3Services
If you have a broken or chipped tooth that is not
the result of a recent trauma, Your dentist can
evaluate the tooth for possible treatment. It is
still important to have the tooth evaluated right
away, because in some situations a minor
procedure now can save you from a more
significant procedure in the near future!
A very small chip may be corrected by enamel
shaping. If the chip is a little larger, the best
options may be bonding or a veneer.
4What is a Crown?
A crown (also called a cap) is a man-made cover
that protects the tooth. It may be used to
restore and preserve decayed, broken or cracked
teeth. Crowns can also improve your overall
appearance.
Why you may need a crown?
- Your dentist may advise you to get a crown if you
have - A decayed tooth that needs to be restored to its
normal shape and size - A cracked tooth with large cavities or worn
fillings - A poor-fitting crown
- A root canal treated tooth
- A cosmetic problem
- A bite problem
5What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root
(synthetic material) that is surgically anchored
into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth, bridge
or denture in place. The benefit of using
implants is that they dont rely on neighboring
teeth for support, they are permanent and stable.
Implants are a good solution to tooth loss
because they look and feel like natural teeth.
Implant material is made from different types of
metallic and bone-like ceramic materials that are
compatible with body tissue. There are different
types of dental implants the first is placed
directly into the jaw bone, like natural tooth
roots the second is used when the jaw structure
is limited, therefore, a custom-made metal
framework fits directly on the existing bone.
What Dental Implants Can Do?
- Replace one or more teeth without affecting
bordering teeth - Support a bridge and eliminate the need for a
removable partial denture - Provide support for a denture, making it more
secure and comfortable
6What is gum disease?
Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) is
an infection of the tissues surrounding and
supporting the teeth. It is a major cause of
tooth loss in adults. Basically the bone
supporting the roots of the teeth is destroyed
and the tooth or teeth get loose over time.
What is Invisalign?
The Invisalign system is a series of clear
aligners used to straighten teeth. The Invisalign
aligners are made after the orthodontist takes
impressions of your teeth and sends them to a
lab. The lab makes the custom aligners especially
for you using computerized technology. After a
couple of weeks the clear Invisalign aligners
arrive at the office and the first set of
Invisalign aligners are tried on your teeth.
7When should my child first go to the dentist?
Because some cavities are unavoidable even in the
presence of excellent oral hygiene and a good
diet, your child should see the dentist within
one year of the eruption of the first tooth. At
Holt Family Dentistry we prefer to see kids at
age 4 and above. At this visit Dr. Holt will
check your childs teeth and give you prevention
strategies to help ensure a lifetime of healthy
teeth and gums.
Tips for a successful first visit
- Practice opening wide and looking at or counting
teeth - Dont use bad words such as hurt, pain, drill
and shot, as your child may dwell on these images - Dont tell your child about unpleasant dental
experiences you may have had as a youngster (you
will be surprised how different dentistry is now!)
8GENERAL INFORMATION
Whitening, also referred to as bleaching is a
procedure which is designed to lighten the color
of your teeth. When done properly, whitening will
not harm your teeth or gums. Significant
lightening can be achieved in the vast majority
of cases, but the RESULTS CANNOT BE GUARANTEED.
Whitening, like any other treatment, has some
inherent risks and limitations. These are seldom
serious enough to discourage you from having your
teeth whitened, but should be considered in
making a decision to have the treatment.
What are porcelain veneers?
- Veneers are a thin, semi-translucent laminate
permanently bonded to your teeth. While theyre
not suitable for every patient, veneers are the
most aesthetic alternative for a variety of
dental conditions involving the front teeth,
including - Diastemas (spaces between teeth)
- Broken or chipped teeth
- Unsightly, stained, or washed-out fillings
- Permanently stained or discolored teeth that
cant be bleached - Crooked teeth
