Common Types Of Volcanoes

  • Volcanoes are not all created equally. They
differ in size, shape, composition and style of
volcanic eruptions. This article will help you to
tell the difference between the 5 main types of
    volcanoes
  • Shield Volcanoes - Shield volcanoes are volcanoes
shaped like a bowl or shield in the middle with
long gentle slopes made by basaltic lava flows.
Mount Kilauea and Maunaloa in Hawaii are good
    examples of shield volcanoes.

  • Composite Volcanoes - Also known as
    strato-volcano are steep-sided volcanoes composed
of several layers of volcanic rocks, usually made
from high-viscosity lava, ash and rock debris.
Mount Fuji in Japan, Mt. Etna, and Mount St.
Helens in Italy are examples of this type of
    volcano.
  • Cinder Cone Volcanoes Also called scoria cones
is the most common and the smallest type of
volcano. These are made up exclusively of
fragmented lava that erupts explosively is made
up of cinders. Parícutin Volcano, Mexico is an
    example of cinder cone volcanoes.

  • Volcanic Or Lava Domes Formed by small masses
of lava which are too thick to flow very far and
hence, it continues to piles up within near the
volcanic vent. Mono domes in California and Mont
Pelée in Martinique are examples of lava domes.
  • Supervolcano Typically a supervolcano has a
large caldera and can produce devastation on an
    enormous, sometimes continental, scale. Such
volcanoes are able to severely cool global
temperatures for many years after the eruption
due to the huge volumes of sulfur and ash
released into the atmosphere. Yellowstone is one
    example of a supervolcano.
