What is a suffix?
A suffix is something that we add to the end of a
word that changes its meaning.

Here are some suffixes that you might have met
before
catches
dogs
pull pulling pulled puller
fast faster fastest

- ness
is a suffix that turns adjectives (words that
describe) into nouns (words that name). Here is
an example
kind kindness
Charlie was kind to his friend. Charlie showed kindness to his friend.

Can you add ness to these adjectives and use
them in a sentence?
  • bright
  • dark
  • sad

can be added to verbs and adjectives to make a
noun. For example
enjoy
enjoyment
appoint appointment Sometimes adding
the suffix ment changes the spelling of the
root word. argue argument merry

can be added to words to make adjectives. Think
of this suffix as meaning full of.
For example what is something that is full of
beauty? beautiful Notice that the y at the
end of beauty changes to an i in beautiful.

Can you make these words into adjectives using
the ful suffix?
If the root word ends in a y and has more than
one syllable, the y will change to an i.
  • bounty
  • resent
  • hope

can be added to words to make adjectives. This
suffix tells us what the subject does not
have. For example
hope hopeless
Lucy showed hope during a hard time. When Charlotte lost her new shoes she felt hopeless.
