Geologically Active
  • The Pacific Northwest is highly geologically
active with both active volcanoes and geologic
    faults.
  • There are several active volcanoes in the region.
The most recent of these to erupt was Mount Saint
    Helens in 1980.
  • The Juan de Fuca Plate is capable of producing
megathrust earthquakes of magnitude 9. The last
such earthquake was the Cascadia earthquake in
    1700.

Juan de Fuca Plate
  • This tectonic plate causes a lot of seismic
    active (earthquakes).

43
Seismic activity in the region.
44
Native/Indigenous People
  • The abundance of plants, animals, and fish along
the coast and in the rivers allowed the native
    people to develop complex, sedentary
    hunter-gatherer societies.

45
Native cultures along the coast were especially
well-developed and wealthy for the time period.
46
Pacific Northwest Natives were also very
artistic(Totem Poles and Ceremonial Masks)
