A part of the structure lying below the ground
surface such as foundation of any type is known
as sub-structure

Foundation

• The term foundation indicates the entire
  sub-structural unit which support the
  superstructure. Thus the broader sense
  foundation includes a transmitting medium.

Super structure

• Superstructure denotes part of the structure
  lying above the ground surface. In context of
  buildings various part like wall, roof , door
  and window flooring constitute the
  superstructure.

Types of structures
1) Load bearing structure

• In this type of construction, load of the
  structure is transferred to the walls as roof,
• Floors are directly supported on walls.

2) Frame structure

• In frame structure load is transferred through a
  frame of slab, beam, column and footing to the
  underlying soil.

3) COMPOSITE STRUCTURE

• The outer walls can be of load bearing type where
  as column and beam structure can be provided
  internally.
