• A lot of talk goes on about the 'generation gap.'
  In fact, extensively researched studies show that
  the 'Battle of the Ages' is no myth and exists
  very much in reality. It's common perception that
  prep-war and post-war generations are very
  different in attitudes, behaviors, beliefs,
  characteristics, communication styles and
  expectations. Hence, connecting with a different
  generation is quite a task.
• Especially since the 19th century, generations
  have largely been classified into categories.
  Economists and anthropologists say that typically
  there are four types that exist in the workplace
  today.
• Traditionalists - those born before 1946
• Baby Boomers - generation between 1946 and 1964
  
• Generation X - 1965-1980
• Generation Y or the Millennials - the
  generation after 1980

• But is there that much difference between
  subsequent generations? To understand this in
  perspective, we know now that the difference
  between the Traditionalists and Baby Boomers is
  that the former generation lived during an era of
  hardship and difficulties, of scarcities, lesser
  incomes, less supplies and rations, fear of
  backlash among races, religions and communities
  during world wars and several other issues. Post
  World War II, when the economy boomed and
  industrialization grew, there were times of
  plenty and progress on all fronts this is the
  period the Baby Boomer generation was born into
  and so they have seen only the 'brighter side of
  life' mostly. That contributes a great deal to
  differences in attitudes, beliefs and behaviors.

• Although in the years since the Millennium there
  are less and less numbers of the Traditionalists
  and Baby Boomers in the global workplace, the
  perceived generation gap that exists between
  employees in a company or corporate setup can be
  a source of great concern and contention in times
  of promotions, rewards, incentives and others.
  Organizations therefore have to create processes
  and systems that such gaps do not impede employee
  and company productivity.
• A much talked about 'profiles report' suggests
  that several measures can be put in place to
  encourage connections between generations.
• Educate employees on the differences between
  generations and how to approach each other
• Encourage and initiate conversations and
  networking between employees of different
  generations
• Match employees of different generations with
  appropriate customer bases
