Ephesus is an amazing ancient city which was
established by Greeks and enlarged by Romans.
During its history city was an important
metropolitan of ancient world. Beside being an
important ancient settlement, Ephesus is also
most visited ancient city of Modern Turkish
Republic. From all over the world people come
Ephesus to feel breeze of history.

Ancient City of Ephesus Ruins
Ephesus founded by Athens as a colony in the 10th
century BC. When it was first founded, people
dedicated city to Goddes Artemis who is known as
maiden huntress goddes of Greek culture.  Artemis
is more than this in Ephesus as Ephesus is not
only a Greek setlement but also it was an
Anatolian setlement. Artemis was goddes of
Fertility, goddes of giving birth shortly
Artemis was the Mother Goddess of Ephesus who
controlls every single inch of city. During the
Classical Greek era Ephesus was one of the 12
cities of the Ionian League. The city flourished
after it was given to the Roman Republic by Greek
King Attalos III in 133 BCE.

Ephesus Museum
The Ephesus Museum is a rich and important museum
for Ephesian and Anatolian archeology with
artifacts from digs at Ephesus, The Basilica of
St. John, Temple of Artemis, the Belevi Mausoleum
and the other local ruins. Including artifacts
from the Mycenian, Archaic and Turkish periods as
well, the majority are from the Hellenistic,
Roman, Byzantine periods.

Temple of Artemis
The Temple of Artemis was located on the
southwest of Ayasuluk hill where Selcuk Castle
located on. It was considered to be one of the
Seven Wonder of the World by ancient writers.
Today on Ephesus tours  you can can only see the
ruins of the foundations of this marvelous
construction of the Hellenistic Age , entirely
made of marble and full of sculptured columns
capitals and shafts.

House of Virgin Mary
According to Christian belief Virgin Mary may
have spent her last days in this house which was
erected on the slope of the Bulbul Mountain.
Indeed, she may have come in the area together
with Saint John, who spent several years in the
area to spread Christianity. Before Jesus was
crucified Apostle John brought Virgin Mary to
Ephesus by the, because Jesus entrust her to
Johns care (John 1926-27) and St. John wanted
to spread Cristianty in Ephesus whose people were
believing goddess Artemis. However Virgin Mary
preferred a remote place arouns Ephesus rather
than living in center where people were beliving
paganism as her son died on the way of God.

The Basilica of St. John
According to the historian Eusebios, St. John
returned to Ephesus with Mary after being
banished from Jerusalem between 37 and 42 A.D. He
continued to write the Bible after a period he
died here at Ephesus. Following his will, he was
buried in the southern foothills of Ayasuluk Hill.

The Cave of Seven Sleepers
According to the written accounts, this the place
where seven young man came to after running away
from the city because of the persecution of
Christians during the reign ofEmperor Decius.
They distributed all their goods to the poor and
found a cave to pray. The emperor Decius,
convinced that they would never favour paganism,
had the cave sealed. And after falling asleep,
they woke up 300 years later during the reign of
Emperor Theodosius II. When these seven man woke
up after paasage 300 years Christianty had become
the official religion of Rome. The landowner, to
use as a yard for his animals, opened the mouth
of the cave and found the Seven Sleepers inside.
