5About Title
- "Rain man" can be used to describe someone who
makes random or odd statements with no
provocation. - Raymond Babbitt is playing the role of Rain Man
in this movie.
Why Movie was made The movie was inspired by the
real Rain Man Kim Peek, who sadly passed away in
2011. Like Raymond, Kim Peek had extreme memory
abilities. He remembered almost everything he had
ever read and could simultaneously read both
pages of an open book and retain the information.
He apparently had developed language areas in
both hemispheres. Peek was a living encyclopedia.
He spent every day with his dad in the library
absorbing information. Among his most impressive
feats was his ability to provide traveling
directions between any two cities in the world.
Real Rain Man
6- Summary
- It is the story of an abrasive and selfish young
wheeler-dealer,Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) and
his Brother Raymond Babbitt(Dustin Hoffman). - who discovers that his estranged father has died
and bequeathed all of his multimillion-dollar
estate to his other son, Raymond (Dustin
Hoffman), an autistic savant, of whose existence
Charlie was unaware. - Charlie is left only his father's car and his
collection of rose bushes. - Â Raymond is autistic, but is able to calculate
complicated mathematical problems in his head
with great speed and accuracy. - Their father has left his fortune to Raymond who
doesn't even understand what money is for.
Charlie is enraged by what has happened and by
his father keeping Raymond's existence from him
for his entire life. He kidnaps Raymond from his
residential home but then finds that Raymond will
only fly QANTAS(Queensland and Northern Territory
Aerial Services) - The two begin a long road trip that leads them
to an understanding of each other. - The brothers didn't really understand eachother
in begining, Tom cruise was just jealous because
he didn't inherit the car. then they become so
close, Tom cruise relizes what he's become and
learns what life is about.
7- Theme
- The theme of the movie is that there is an innate
value and worth to everylife and that every
person is valuable and has something to offer. - Life is full of emotion that cannot be explained
by logic. - It also demonstrates the old adage "Blood is
thicker than water". - Phychological Reviews
- Rain Man is a movie about two conditions
autism and Savant Syndrome. Not all autistic
persons are savants, in fact only one in 10
autistic persons have any savant abilities, let
alone the prodigious skills of Raymond Babbitt. - Â It is a biological disorder and it affects his
emotions, memory (his memory is fantastic), his
personality, his mental processing and his
speech. Biological Perspective There is a 78
increase in the childhood autism rate over the
past decade. Whether autism is an evolutionary
step is based solely on opinion, but, Autism does
have evolutionary advantages.Â
