Title: What is Suboxone

1

What is Suboxone?
2
  • The process of detoxification is very unpleasant.
Thats why drug rehab centers often use
medication during the detox process to make it
more manageable for the recovering addict. Some
treatment centers in Florida use a drug called
    Suboxone to assist with withdrawal.

3
  • Suboxone is a combination of two different drugs
used to treat opioid addiction buprenorphine and
naloxone. Its most commonly used in the
treatment of opioid addiction. Naloxone reduces
the effects that addicts would get if they were
to take their drug of choice while under the
    effects of the medication.

4
  • The buprenorphine is an opioid medication that
relieves the cravings that addicts experience for
opioids without providing the drug high that will
trigger their addiction. The combination of
medications removes the incentive to relapse.

5
  • Because Suboxone is an opioid itself, it has a
potential for abuse. Application of the drug must
be strictly regimented and overseen to ensure
that recovering addicts do not transfer their
    addiction on to the medication.

6
  • At the end of treatment, clinicians may have to
wean the patient off the drug slowly to avoid the
withdrawal symptoms that it was originally meant
    to lessen or prevent.

7
  • The dosage depends on the severity of the
addiction as well as the size of the patient. One
benefit of Suboxone is that it can be prescribed
by a doctor and doesnt require going to
substance abuse treatment centers that specialize
with the drug, such as a rehab clinic. However,
not every pharmacy carries the drug.

8
  • Those with moderate hepatic impairment may suffer
from precipitated withdrawal from the naloxone.
These people may be transferred to straight
buprenorphine treatment. Patients are required to
have regular blood tests during Suboxone
    treatment to evaluate liver function.

9
  • Suboxone has the potential to cause liver
problems, so isnt recommended for people who
have pre-existing liver conditions. In fact,
people who have severe hepatic impairment
shouldnt take it at all, and a doctor may not
recommend it for people who have moderate hepatic
    impairment.
