  •  Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers,
stems, and seeds from the hemp plant, Cannabis
sativa. Most people who use marijuana smoke it,
but it can be mixed into food, brewed into tea,
or even used in a vaporizer. Within a few minutes
after inhaling marijuana smoke, a persons heart
rate speeds up, the breathing passages relax and
become enlarged, and blood vessels in the eyes
expand, making the eyes look bloodshot (red). The
heart ratenormally 70 to 80 beats per minutemay
increase by 20 to 50 beats per minute or may even
double in some cases. Taking other drugs with
    marijuana can amplify this effect.

  • The main active chemical in marijuana is THC
    (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). It is a
    psychoactive ingredient. The highest
concentrations of THC are found in the leaves and
flowers. When marijuana smoke is inhaled, THC
rapidly passes from the lungs into the
bloodstream and is carried to the brain and other
organs throughout the body. THC from the
marijuana acts on specific receptors in the
brain, called cannabinoid receptors, starting off
a chain of cellular reactions that finally lead
to the euphoria, or "high" that users experience.

  • The effects of marijuana on the body are
immediate. Longer-term effects may depend on how
you take it, how much you take, and how often you
use it. Since its use has long been illegal in
the United States, large-scale studies have been
    difficult to manage.

  • In addition to medicinal use, recent legislation
has made marijuana a legal recreational drug in
Colorado and Washington State. With the potential
for increased recreational use, knowing the
effects that marijuana can have on your body is
    as important as ever.
