What Universities are looking for
5Many students want to go to college.
6If a college is famous, then they will have
thousands of applicants.
7A university may only accept 2000 news students a
year.
8But maybe 5000 applicants will apply!
9So how does the admissions office choose the best
students?
10There are many things that the admissions office
will look at to choose the best students for
their school.
111. They will look at your SAT, TOEFL, IELTS and
other test scores
122. They will look at all of the extra activities
that you do.
- Sports
- MUN
- Band
- Theatre
- Student Council
- Art
- Student News
- Yearbook
- And more!
133. They may want to see clubs or other volunteer
services that you have done
- Red Cross
- Working with children as a tutor
- Volunteering at a hospital
- Working at the orphanage
- Running a club for the school
- Cleaning up the city
- And more
144. They will look at the classes that you have
taken to see if the classes match what they are
looking for
- Do you have AP and Advanced classes?
- If you want to be an Engineer, do you have a lot
of math classes? - If you want to be an Artist or a Designer, do you
have a lot of art and design classes?
15They will look at your transcript to find your GPA
- Transcript- a record of every class and the grade
that you received starting from Grade 9 to Grade
12 - GPA- (Grade Point Average) all of your grades
averaged together - 4.0A (Perfect Score)
- 3.5 lower A
- 3.0 B
- 2.5 C
- 1.5 D
16Your grades matter!
17All of these things will be considered when you
apply to college.
18Famous universities will require a certain test
score and a certain GPA
- New York University
- SAT score- minimum of a 2000
- GPA score- minimum of a 3.6
- Must have at least 4 AP classes
- Most have TOEFL score of ___
- And so on
19What if your scores are too low?
- If you have a GPA of 3.4 and New York University
wants a 3.6, it will be very difficult to get in,
because there are thousands of applicants all
with high GPA scores.
20This is why your grades matter. Starting in grade
9 to grade 12.
