The state of California is unique for
motorcyclists in that it allows lane splitting
law. Lane splitting is the practice of riding
a motorcycle between lanes of traffic. This is
most commonly performed when motorcyclist need to
pass slower-moving traffic.

5
Lane splitting is legal in California, but can be
risky for motorcyclists. Legislation has been
introduced to regulate how lane splitting is
executed. The standard recommendation is that a
motorcycle should go no faster than 10 miles per
hour faster than adjacent traffic in order ensure
safety. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
warns against sharing lanes altogether because of
safety concerns. If motorcyclists split lanes
unsafely, they will be ticketed.

In addition to lane splitting laws, it is
required that all California riders must wear a
Department of Transportation certified helmet.
California motorcyclists must also have
EPA-compliant exhaust systems on 2011 and newer
models.

If you are under 21 in California and wish to
obtain a motorcycle license, you are required to
complete a Basic Rider Course before receiving a
motorcycle instruction permit. Even if you are 21
and older, riders are encouraged to take a
motorcycle rider course but are not required.
