Oceanography also known as oceanology and marine
science, is the branch of Earth science that
studies the ocean. It covers a wide range of
topics, including marine organisms and ecosystem d
ynamics ocean currents, waves, and geophysical
fluid dynamics plate tectonics and the geology
of the sea floor and fluxes of various chemical
substances and physical properties within the
ocean and across its boundaries.
Paleoceanography studies the history of the
oceans in the geologic past.

The minimum educational qualification for this
course is a bachelors degree in science i.e.
B.Sc. either in Zoology / Botany / Chemistry /
Fishery Science / Earth Science / Physics /
Agriculture / Microbiology / Applied Sciences or
in any other equivalent disciplines.  One can
also pursue M .Tech in Oceanography or Marine
Biology. The minimum qualification is MSc and
sometime a valid GATE score is essential for
admission to this program.

Oceanography Careers in India are vast and
varied. There are numerous oceanography jobs in
India especially in industry, commerce or
research. Those who have a strong scientific
training including laboratory or computing
skills, as well as knowledge about the
environment have plenty of opportunities. Those
with right qualification can get oceanography
jobs in public sector, private sector and various
governmental establishments as a scientist,
engineer or a technician. In public sector one
can find opportunities in Oil India and
government sector organizations like Geological
Survey of India, Meteorological Survey of India,
Department of Oceanography etc.

Remuneration

A fresher, after completing post graduation in
Oceanography can earn a monthly salary between Rs
8,000 Rs 12, 000 in public sector. The salary
is slightly higher in the private sector. With a
Ph.D., one can earn more than Rs 15, 000 per
month.
