• Many road traffic collisions occur when the
  driver is distracted by something and this is why
  the police are so hot on enforcing the ban on the
  use of phones.
• Even hands-free can be dangerous although its
  hard to catch anyone out. But it is important to
  keep any call short and only dial out when the
  car is stationary.
• How strict the law is on driving and distraction
  came to light in a case recently where a woman
  was spotted by police sitting in her car peeling
  and eating a banana. In mitigation she claimed
  that just like the police car, she was stationary
  in a long traffic jam.

• Despite this she was fined and had points put on
  her license. So when you see how much audio and
  other electronic equipment goes into a car its
  difficult to know what is and what isnt
  construed as a distraction.
• The vast majority of drivers use a Satnav and
  follow the screen instructions. Although a voice
  tells them where to turn and where to head for
  all drivers tend to keep an eye on the screen
  just to make sure.
• So with a talking person and a screen to watch,
  can this be any safer than talking on the phone?
  I was stopped and fined many years ago when
  mobile phones were relatively new, for talking
  whilst driving.

• The copper that pulled me over told me I should
  have both hands on the steering wheel at all
  times when driving. I pulled a confused face and
  asked him what I should do if I wanted to change
  gear.
• This clearly did not amuse him and sadly he must
  have been having a particularly bad shift as he
  then delayed me for nearly one hour checking the
  vehicle and contacting base to see if I was
  wanted for anything.
• If you visit a car audio shop you will see a lot
  of different pieces of kit and although most are
  designed to make the journey easier and more
  interesting its mostly for the passengers.

• Incidentally, people now rely on Satnavs so much
  that many cannot read a paper map. Most drivers
  over the age of fifty or sixty can still do so
  although they too now prefer the machine to the
  paper.
• Gone are the days when you could have some great
  arguments because your wife was the front seat
  navigator and right got confused with left. The
  only way to make it easier was to turn the map
  upside down.
• This meant right and left were easier to explain
  but it also meant nothing else could be read.

• In car entertainment changes so fast with the
  increasing speed of technological advancement
  that its always worth popping down to a car
  audio shop to check on the latest equipment. And
  one of the other good bits of news is how little
  such great technology costs.
• If you want to know how cheap it all is just ask
  some older person how much a new car CD player
  cost when they first arrived on the scene. How
  Much?
