Title: Double page spread
1DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD RESEARCH
BY CHARLOTTE BARLOW
2A brief tagline summing up the film
Name of film is very bold and accompanied by the
age certificate of the film
A key for the star rating is given for benefit of
reader
Indicator of how good the film is and by placing
this in the corner of the picture it is easily
noticed
Gives detail of the film such as director,
actors, distributor and running time
A brief plot summary is given as well as
introducing the main characters and the actors
who played them
A picture from the film of the protagonist which
take up the page
A final statement on the film and a star rating
out of five
Page numbers in each corner and name of the
magazine
3These are reviews from critics about the film
such as their star rating and comments. These
tend to sway some viewers minds on whether they
would go see the film or not
The movie title is one of the boldest text on the
page which straight away infers to the audience
what film the review is about
This is a small side reel of still from other
films also being released around the same time
and a small synopsis of them. They have been made
small and off to the side as they are not as
important and do not add the main focus of the
article which is about Pirates of the Caribbean
There is only a brief explanation of the film and
some critics own views on acting, shot variety
and over plot and enjoy ability
The whole second page is made up of a still shot
from the movie of the protagonist
4It is a magazine double page spread from the
magazine empire with the new Pirates of the
Caribbean movie being talked about. The colours
used are mainly red, white and black so that the
writing can stand out because the background is
white and the writing is black. The font is quite
small but the headline is big and bold so it can
stand out from the text and also the sub headline
is big and bold. The writing is on the left hand
third with the headline on the left hand third as
well. The target audience would be movie lovers
or fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean moves. It
is typical of the brand name because it is a well
known film being talked about so that means
people will want to buy it. The images are the
most effective because they are all on the right
hand page so it shows what the film is going to
feature and pictures of some of the scenes.

6The images used are all stills from the actual
film, making for an article which almost
advertises different parts of the film. This is a
feature that I am keen to replicate in my double
page article, but my only concern is that the
page may look too cluttered. There is a strong
colour cohesion element in the article, with
orange, white and black the only colours used in
the article (other than the pictures). This gives
the article continuity, a theme that I hope to
replicate, it also makes it recognisable at a
glance. The title of the film is instantly clear,
as are the film stats directly underneath. This
seems to be a convention that is ever present in
film articles more than any other form, as the
point of the article has to be clear from the
outset. It will be interesting to discuss with my
group about either following the standard
convention or challenging it. In terms of extra
information, the Avatar facts box goes some way
in giving the review some added value. The
article, despite being brief, seems succinct and
informative, meaning that it will grab the
attention of casual readers as well as big film
fans. There are definitely parts of the article
that I am keen to replicate however others I may
challenge.
7It is a magazine double page spread from the
magazine empire with a new film Black Swan being
talked about. The colours used are mainly white
and black which links with the name of the film
because it has black in the title so they make a
black background and also you see a swan as white
so they use that for the text. The font is quite
small but the headline is big and bold so it can
stand out from the text. The writing is on the
right hand third with the headline in the middle
of the page and the picture of the main character
on the left page. The target audience would be
movie lovers or fans that would like to see the
film. It is typical of the brand name because it
is a new film being talked about so that means
movie fans will want to find out about it so they
will buy the magazine. The image is the most
effective because it shows what the Black Swan
looks like and shows a long shot of the actress.
8The use of a small poster banner signifies the
other main characters in the film, this is
established due to the fact that the women in the
image are all wearing the same kind of clothing.
The representation of the women in the image is
unconventional as women are generally seen in
provoking poses which links to the unconventional
sexual representation of women. However here they
look dominant, powerful and a force to be
reckoned with
Year of the film/magazine printed copy
The unconventional placement of an image at the
top of a double page spread means that the focus
is of the woman. The fact that the woman is
pointing her gun towards the text implies that it
is important for the viewer to read about her
story
There are small descriptive subtitles
There is a convention of a black and white colour
scheme used on the page. The white background
allows the black text and image to stand out
Page number written at the footer of the page
9The colours used are mainly white and black so
that the writing can stand out because the
background is white and the writing is black. The
font is quite small but the letter L is big and
bold because it is the start of the text and so
it can stand out next to the text. The writing is
on both pages. The target audience would be movie
lovers or fans of the new film. It is typical of
the brand name because it is a new movie that is
coming out so people will want to buy it to see
what it is about. The images are the most
effective because they show a little bit of the
film and shows what the new film looks like.
