Title: What Makes A Good Senior Caregiver?

1
What Makes A Good Senior Caregiver?
  • What traits should you weigh heavily as you
consider hiring a caregiver for a senior?
    Assuming that an applicant's professional
    references check out completely, consider
evaluating prospective hires according to some of
    these important qualities

2
Patience
  • Especially in the case of a senior suffering from
dementia or other emotional issues, the quality
of patience remains very important. Try to locate
a caregiver who will display consistent patience
and gentleness in the face of obstructive or
irrational behavior. Many senile people become
irritable quickly. A patient caregiver will
appreciate that this behavior stems from a
medical condition of dementia, and will tolerate
outbursts without reacting negatively to verbal
    abuse or angry outbursts.

3
Cheerfulness
  • A cheerful attitude on the part of a caregiver
often assists an elderly patient suffering from
loneliness, grief over the loss of a spouse or
friends, and other deep emotions. By focusing on
positives, a caregiver may substantially enhance
the quality of daily life for a senior.

4
Reliability
  • You should actively seek a caregiver you can
depend upon to show up on schedule. For instance,
if a senior requires transportation to a medical
appointment, you don't want an attendant to
arrive late or to postpone necessary procedures
for the senior due to last minute personal
scheduling changes. Few situations prove more
potentially dangerous than leaving a senior with
dementia who requires a caregiver without
adequate support. Scheduling a caregiver on short
    notice sometimes proves very difficult.

5
Intellignce
  • A senior also benefits from the attention
provided by an intelligent caregiver. For
instance, you don't want an elderly patient to
experience medication errors because an assistant
failed to dispense prescribed medication dosages
accurately. An intelligent assistant will behave
in a proactive manner to help seniors avoid
    unsafe or dangerous situations.

6
High Ethical Standards
  • One exceedingly important quality in a caregiver
for an elderly person involves maintaining a high
    ethical standard of behavior. Although
circumstances differ, a senior may suffer from
poor memory or periodic confusion. In this
situation, an older person easily becomes the
victim of dishonest behavior. Try to find a
    caregiver who consistently displays moral,
ethical and honest behavior. Someone who respects
the rights of a vulnerable person will safeguard
    them from harm more effectively.

7
Friendly And Interested in People
  • Often, elderly people enjoy conversing with their
caregivers. Many seniors maintain far fewer
contacts with other people than they did at a
younger age, due to limited mobility, health
issues or the loss of peers. They may feel
depressed and isolated. A friendly, sociable
caregiver can brighten an invalid's day by
displaying genuine interest in them. Conversing
with a caregiver provides a valuable social
outlet for many seniors as they cope with a loss
    of independence and autonomy.
