Title: Importance of Orthodontic Treatment in Childhood

1
  • Importance of Orthodontic Treatment in
    Childhood

2
  • Malocclusion among adults can range from
simple malocclusion only requiring dental braces
to a complicated malocclusion that requires
    surgery. Malocclusion and other orthodontic
problems can be prevented with early orthodontic
    treatments in childhood.

3
  • It is recommended that before the child reaches
the age of 7 years old he/she should be checked
for orthodontic problems. Orthodontists know how
to check for subtle signs and symptoms indicative
    of orthodontic problems.

4
  • Family dentists or pediatric dentists should
explain to parents the importance of early
orthodontic treatment. It is ideal that treatment
to orthodontic problems should start at an early
age because your childs jaw is still soft and
the growth of teeth is easier to correct.
Correction during the formative years of your
childs permanent teeth decreases the chances of
complex orthodontic problems in their adulthood.

5
  • Orthodontic problems in adulthood causes pain
which disrupts the normal function of teeth and
it can also affect ones self confidence because
this makes you look visually unattractive. Here
are some of the signs your childs orthodontist
may teach you to look out for that needs early
    orthodontic treatment

6
  • Early or late loss of deciduous or baby teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Protruding or shifting jaws
  • Teeth that wont correctly meet
  • Bad habits such as thumb sucking or sucking of
other fingers, or biting the insides of the mouth

7
  • Grinding of the teeth
  • Breathing through the mouth
  • Difficulty in chewing or speaking properly
  • Visually, the presence of facial imbalance

8
  • As parents, it is your responsibility to
report to your childs dentist or orthodontist if
you have noticed these warning signs. In doing
so, will greatly help the orthodontic condition
of your child in his/her adulthood.
