WIFI TECHNOLOGY
4
INDEX
  • Intro to wifi
  • Basic working of WIFI
  • How WIFI works
  • WIFI enabled devices
  • IEEE 802.11 Standard
  • Requirement of hardwares
  • Area coverage by WIFI

5
Intro to wifi
  • Short for wireless fidelity.
  • It is a wireless technology that uses radio
frequency to transmit data through the air.
  • Wi-Fi is based on the 802.11 standard
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11b
  • 802.11g

6
Basic working
  • No Wiring system
  • Radio Waves
  • Two-way communication
  • Computer Adapter
  • Wireless Router

7
HOW WIFI WORKS
8
WIFI enabled devices
  • Computer
  • Laptop
  • Smartphones
  • Printers etc.

9
IEEE 802.11 standard
  • The IEEE 802.11 standard is a set of media access
control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY)
    specifications for implementing wireless local
    area network (WLAN).
  • They are created and maintained by
the IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802).
  • The base version of the standard was released in
    1997.

10
Requirement Of Hardwares To Connect To A WIFI
Network
  • PCI Wi-fi Card
  • USB Wireless Adapter
  • Hub or Switch
  • Wireless router
  • Embedded systems

11
An embedded RouterBoard 112 with U.FL-RSMA
pigtail and R52 mini PCI Wi-Fi card
12
Wireless adapters can plug into a computer's PC
card slot or USB port.
13
A wireless router uses an antenna to send signals
to wireless devices and a wire to send signals to
the Internet
14
Area coverage by WIFI
  • Wi-Fi technology is used to provide Internet
access to devices that are within the range of
a wireless network that is connected to the
    Internet.
  • The coverage of one or more interconnected access
points (hotspots) can extend from an area as
small as a few rooms to as large as many square
    kilometres.

15
Advantages
  • Freedom You can work from any location that you
    can get a signal.
  • Setup Cost No cabling required.
  • Flexibility Quick and easy to setup in temp or
    permanent space.
  • Mobile Access Can access the network on the
    move.

16
Disadvantages
  • Speed Slower than cable.
  • Range Affected by various medium.
  • Travels best through open space.
  • Reduced by walls, glass, water, etc
  • Security Greater exposure to risks.
  • Unauthorized access.

17
Basic Security Strategies
  • Change the default network name in the access
    point.
  • Change the default access point password.
  • Center the access point in the middle of the
    building/house.

18
HOW TO USE WIFI IN ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM
19
How to turn on/off wifi in Android Devices
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Turn on WIFI radio .

20
How to Connect to a WIFI network
  • After turning on WIFI you see a list of networks
    .
  • Choose any one from the list and
  • Tap connect .
  • If using a secured network then
  • Provide proper password.
  • Now Enjoy Browse Internet

connect
21
Sharing of Data connection in Smartphones
(Tethering)
  • Tethering is when you turn your smartphone into a
mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and share your phones 3G/4G
    data connection.
  • Once you've turned tethering on,
  • any device with a wireless connection can connect
to the internet via your smartphone's connection.

22
What is Next?
  • Now, the focus in wireless is shifting to wide
    area, i.e., WiMax and LIFI
  • WiMax short for Worldwide Interoperability for
    Microwave Access.
  • it is defined in IEEE 802.16 standards.
  • It is designed to deliver a metro area broadband
wireless access (BWA) service, and is being
    promoted by the WiMax Forum.
  • WiMAX is quite similar to WiFi, but on a much
larger scale and at faster speeds.

23
Intro to Lifi technology
  • LiFi is a wireless optical networking technology
    ,
  • that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for data
    transmission.
  •  LiFi is designed to use LED light bulbs similar
to those currently in use in many
    energy-conscious homes and offices.

WIFI Summary
  • WiFi is a freedom freedom from wires.
  • It allows you to connect to the Internet from
just about anywhere a coffee shop, a hotel
room, or a conference room at work.
  • it is almost 10 times faster than a regular
    dial-up connection.
