Burst Pipe
  • A burst pipe can cause big problems for your
home. Contact a plumber immediately if you have a
burst pipe. If you leave the issue untreated, it
may cause extensive damage to your property.
  • Common causes of burst pipes?
  • The most common cause of burst pipe is freezing.
Metal pipes are known to freeze very often mainly
because they expand from ice in the pipes.
Building pressure caused by ice can cause a burst
pipe. Pipes that are exposed to the cold weather
    are more vulnerable to freezing.
  • Old and damaged pipes can burst when their seals
age and become worn. Corrosion on metal pipes
will weaken the walls and result in a burst pipe
because of the pressure caused by the water. Poly
pipes that are made of plastic material were used
in construction during the period 1978-1998.
These pipes react to chlorine that is present in
the water supply, causing the pipe wall to weaken
    which results in bursting pipe.
  • Underground pipes can burst if tree or plant
roots have been able to enter. Rodents can chew
the pipe while trying to find a water source and
will chew on the weak spots.
  • How can you avoid burst pipes?
  • A burst pipe is usually the result of a long
process of deterioration. To avoid any damage to
your property caused by burst pipes, early
detection and plumbing maintenance is the best
    way.
  • These are the most common signs of pipe
    deterioration
  • Water can be heard running even if turned off
  • Dampness, mould, or water on the walls or ceiling
  • Higher water bills.

An important step in securing your pipe from
freezing is to make sure that they are close to
the warmth of the property. Leaving the doors
under the sink open will allow warmth to enter
and reach the piping. In places where pipes are
exposed to cold air, they can be protected with
insulation. Another way is to apply electric heat
tape over the pipe to secure them from freezing.
When the temperature is low enough that it can
cause freezing pipes, you can open some taps in
your property and let the water drip because
flowing water will not freeze. The best solution
is to have a plumbing expert inspect your
property from inside and outside so they can find
potential problems and give you a full report
about your plumbing installations.
