How Do Braces Work?

  • If you or a family member has crooked,
misaligned, or crowded teeth, you may be
    considering getting braces. Orthodontic
treatment, which typically spans 24 months,
corrects these problems to give you a beautiful
smile and improved oral health. Besides cost and
treatment questions, one thing that patients
frequently ask Dr. Moshena Ahmad at All Star
Dental is How do braces work? Most are not
interested in the extremely technical answer but
    prefer a simple explanation instead.

Straightening the Teeth Through Constant Pressure
  • The purpose of your dentist putting brackets
and wires on your teeth is to force them to move
into a new position. The pressure from the
appliances causes the tissues in your gums to
loosen and the tooth socket to expand. This
allows the tooth to gradually move from its
current position to the desired one.

4
  • Eventually, your jawbone will grow around the
tooth in its new position to hold in place
permanently. Some patients must have one or more
teeth extracted before getting braces to give the
    remaining teeth space to move.
  • Some of your teeth may feel slightly loose
during treatment, but this is normal and nothing
to cause alarm. They will feel more secure as
your treatment progresses and will be firmly in
place by the time Dr. Ahmad removes your braces.

What to Expect When Your Braces Are Removed
  • After removing the metal brackets and wires
from your teeth or when you have worn your last
Invisalign tray, Dr. Ahmad will fit you with a
retainer. You should wear this throughout the day
and night for the prescribed time. A retainer
helps to prevent your teeth from shifting back
into the position they were in before orthodontic
treatment. Its also important to continue to
    practice good oral hygiene skills.
