Amazing Facts Of Jewelry
2
  • The word jewelry comes from jewel, from the old
French jouel, which in turn comes from the
Latin jocale, which means 'plaything'. The
Americans call it jewelry, everyone else calls it
    jewelry.
  • Egypt and Mesopotamia were the first two ancient
    civilizations that started organized production
of jewelry. Their accomplishments in advancement
of metallurgy and gem collecting played important
role for development of jewelry in every
    civilization that came after them.

3
  • Diamonds were first discovered in India, over
2400 years ago. They are one of the hardest
    substances in nature, synthetic nonmaterial's
have been created that are much harder. Although
diamonds are hard, they are not strong. If you
hit one with a hammer it will shatter. The U.S.
is the worlds largest consumer of diamonds.
  • Some of the most notable fashion styles that
    affected jewelry production are Victorian,
Romanticism, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Renaissance,
    and many more.

  • South sea pearl jewelry are only formed in 1 out
of every 10,000 oysters. Most pearls made today
are cultured, or man-made. This process is done
by inserting a small shell into oyster, which
then painstakingly covers it with pearl material
over a minimum of three years.
  • One of the largest sapphires is known as the Star
of Asia, which is currently housed at the
    Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

5
  • 24 carat gold is 99.9 pure, and most US and
European jewellers think it's too soft for
jewelry. But 24 carat gold is the norm
across Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
  • Turquoise is only found in only a few places, the
biggest region being the south western USA.
Turquoise is associated with traditional Native
American jewelry as well as modern jewelry.

6
  • Copper jewelry started appearing about 7000 years
ago. The Museum of Ancient History in Lower
Austria found a female jeweler's grave,
dispelling the long-held assumption that in
ancient times, jewelers were always male.
  • The Indians have been making fine jewelry for
more than 5000 years, an obsession kicked off by
    the Indus Valley Civilization.
