Title: Learning about solid shapes with Libby
1Learning About Solid Shapes with
Libby
23 D or solid shapes have faces ,
vertices, and edges A face is a flat
part of a solid shape. The edge is where two
sides meet. The vertices or vertex of a
solid shape is where two or more edges
meet to form a point.
3This is a sphere. A sphere is a ball. It
has no straight lines . It is one curved
face.
4Here are some things that have the shape
of the sphere. Do you know what they
are? Balls are a sphere so that they
can roll. What are the names of some
sports that use balls? A globe is a
sphere because it is a model of Earth.
Earth is a sphere.
5This is a cylinder. A cylinder looks like a
can. It has a curved face going around
the middle and one circular face at each
end.

6Many kinds of drinks, paint , and food are put
in cans that are the shape of a cylinder. Many
candles are cylinder-shaped also.
7This is a cone. A cone is a curved face
that comes to a point at one end. It has no
straight lines .
8A cone is the perfect thing for holding ice
cream or a small drink of water . A cone -shaped
hat fits easily on your head . Cones are easy to
see so they mark boundaries in sports and other
places.
9This is one kind of pyramid It is like a
cone in that it comes to a point at the
top. It is not like a cone because it
has either a triangle or a square base, 4
triangles , 5 vertices and 8 edges! There are
5 faces on a pyramid like this one.
10The pyramid is a sturdy shape. It is the
shape of a vertical garden, a tent, and some
large buildings are made in a pyramid
shape .
11Here is the cube. It is made up of 6
squares. The cube can be large or very
small, but all 6 squares must be the same
size. It has 6 faces, 12 edges, and 8
vertices or corners.
12A cube can be a box of tissue, a pair of dice,
stacking blocks, a foot rest, a cardboard
packing box, and a photo cube. Many people
get ice out of their refrigerator in cube
shapes
13This is a rectangular prism or a
rectangular solid. Both names for this are
okay. It is made up of 6 rectangles.
It can be large or very small. It has 6
faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices or corners
like the cube.
14A rectangular prism can be a juice box, a
book, a tv screen, a box of tissue, a
chest , and many, many other things all
around us. Just look for yourself!
