  times when you are sick and need your assistant
  coach to step up to the plate.

  depend on your assistant coach. Make sure that he
  or she is acclimated with every player, their
  positions, the comings and goings of the team,
  and your plans for its success. Waiting until an
  emergency arises is not a good idea when asking
  someone to fill in your shoes.

• One of the biggest components and the most
  important is being a role model for youth. Keep
  in mind that if you give your word to your team,
  you must keep that word. If you promise to run a
  play or to give someone else a chance at a
  different position, keep your word. Your youth
  will learn by example and learning to keep
  integrity is the greatest skill you can ever
  teach.
• Relating to Parents
• There should probably be an entire class that
  helps teach coaches how to relate to parents.
  Some cases have been known where parents and
  coaches do not see eye to eye. It is very
  important, once again, to be a role model.
• While you do not have to accommodate every
  request from every parent for the good of the
  team, it is important for parents to know that
  they are being heard. Let them know that you have
  heard their requests and can only honor those
  requests if it is in the best interest of the
  team. Make sure to follow up with each parent
  once you have made a decision.
