Title: What is Matter? by Emma part 2
1Ready for Part 2 ?
2When things fall, like an apple from a
tree, the force that is working on them
is gravity. Sometimes , though, gravity
isnt such a good thing. How did the force
of gravity change this little girl ?
I fell off my bike and my arm hit the
street. Ouch!
3Many things are changed by both force
and temperature. Making a ceramic pot is
one thing.
The potter uses his hands to force the
soft clay into the shape of a pot. Then
he cooks the pot in a hot oven until it
is a hard , solid pot (or piece of matter
).
4So lets review here everything that has
shape is MATTER .
Also, matter can be changed by temperature,
cutting, and force
5The best part of learning about matter is
the types of matter, or states of matter.
Snow?
6The
states
of matter are
7Solids
Liquids
Gases
8There are many kinds of liquids. I bet
you could name least 10 different kinds of
liquids right now!
Clue Im playing in a liquid now. Another
clue Its hot, so I think Ill get a
glass of liquid...
9Theres even more kinds of solids.
(Bailey didnt like this solid one
bit. It was way too cold for her.)
10Yup, that window is solid all right.
11Solids are everywhere!
I bet you can find 10 different solids
just in this picture alone.
12How many gases can you think of ?
Wow! This gas is a lot of fun! Sure, the
kite is plastic, but the wind makes it
fly!
13Here is another way that a combination of a
solid and a gas can make more fun!
Need we say more?
14There are several different gases just in
the air we breathe ! Then there is steam
that is a gas.
Boy, am I hot. I can feel the steam rising
up.
The liquid changes to a vapor called
water vapor. That gas is all around us
all the time.
15And did you know that Smoke from a volcano or
a campfire or fireworks is a gas ?!
16Well, I hope I helped you learn a little
about matter. Ive got to get busy now
and apply a little force and temperature
to these solids and liquids . I promised
Mom Id help her make cookies today. Bye!
