Major Somnath Sharma
  • He was the First recipient of Param Vir Chakra.
  • Major Somnath Sharma is a legendary hero of India
    who is more or less responsible from preventing
    Srinagar fall in Pakistani hands in 1947 War.
  • When he got injured from bullets, he decided to
    fill magazines and issuing them to his troops, he
    himself used Light Machine Gun to kill the enemy.
    In this brave process a mortar shell exploded
    near him. Before dying his last words to HQ were
    I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to
    our last man and our last round.

Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria
  • Captain G. S. Salaria was awarded the Param Vir
    Chakra, Indias highest war time military award
    for his bravery in Congo civil war in 1961.
  • He was part of UN team to save the country from
    rebels and died fighting the rebels.

Captain Vikram Batra
  • Captain Vikram Batra fought in Kargil War (1999)
    and was part of Jammu Kashmir Rifles Unit.
  • He was instrumental in recapturing Peak 5140
    situated a height of 17000 feet. He was killed in
    action while clearing enemy positions.
  • For his bravery he was nicknamed Sher Singh in
    his regiment.
  • The enemy counter attack cut short his life but
    not before he had captured the peak with his last
    words Jai Mata Di.
  • He was given Param Vir Chakra posthumously.

Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav
  • Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav was the hero of
    Tiger Hill.
  • He single handedly fought many enemies and
    captured Tiger Hill.
  • His courage was such that he kept himself alive
    to reach headquarters and give information that
    Pakistan Army is coming back with reinforcement.
  • Fortunately this hero was saved and was awarded
    Param Vir Chakra.

Lance Naik Albert Ekka
  • He sacrificed his life in 1971 War against
    Pakistan.
  • During the battle of Hilli, his troop came under
    immense fire of a LMG  (Light Machine Gun).
    Without caring about his life he marched toward
    enemy bunker destroying bunker after bunker. From
    other end an MMG (Medium Machine Gun) started
    firing and again, already severely injured he
    crawled towards enemy bunker and killed 3
    soldiers and stopped MMG from creating any more
    damage. 
  • In this process however, he received serious
    injuries and succumbed to them. He was awarded
    Param Vir Chakra for his bravery and courage.

Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal
  • During Indo-Pak war of 1971, after killing and
    capturing many enemy personnel, he and his troop
    forced Enemy tanks. He did not stop there and
    went on. He alone destroyed four tanks, in this
    process his tank was hit by enemy. He denied to
    leave the field and continued to fire shot on
    enemy tanks. Last tanks that he shoot was only
    100 meter away and there he suffered another
    injury which resulted in his death.
  • His bravery helped the troop to recapture a
    strong point from Enemy.
  • He was awarded Param Vir Chakra for his bravery
    and courage.

Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon
  • A lone warrior who fought against 6 enemy air
    crafts during 1971 war. First he engaged two of
    them and destroyed both air crafts,but again all
    four enemy air crafts attacked on Sekhon and this
    time he was outnumbered.
  • In his process of saving Srinagar Air Base, he
    was hit and died. His air craft fell into the
    mountains and his body could not be found.
  • He made sure to give enough time to his fellow
    officers to get ready and destroy remaining
    enemies.
  • Till now he is the only officer from Indian Air
    Force to be awarded Param Vir Chakra.

Lieutenant Colonel Ardeshir Tarapore
  • Lieutenant Colonel Ardeshir Tarapore, leading his
    troops against Pakistani army in 1965 war went
    ahead with the aim of destroying every single
    enemy in his range.
  • His leadership and courage raised the morale of
    his troops and they succeeded in their mission.
  • Though in this process one of the greatest Indian
    war heroes lost his life. He was awarded Param
    Vir Chakra for his bravery and courage.

Rifleman Sanjay Kumar
  • He was moving towards capturing Area Flat Top in
    Kargil War. Having scaled the cliff, the team was
    pinned down by machine gun fire from an enemy
    bunker, about 150 meters away. He ran towards the
    bunker firing his automatic gun. He was hit by
    two bullets in his forearm and chest but nothing
    could slow him. He entered into the bunker killed
    three enemy in hand to hand combat and then
    changed Machine Gun direction towards another
    bunker of enemy. This took them by surprise and
    tried to flew away but they all were killed by
    this brave hero Sanjay Kumar. 
  • He has been awarded Param Vir Chakra and is
    currently Naib Subedar in Indian Army.

Naik Jadu Nath Singh
  • In 1947 War Naik Jadu Nath Singh did something
    which was extraordinary.  
  • His small troop was outnumbered by enemy but his
    leadership and bravery was such that enemy got
    confused on how many Indian soldiers are actually
    there.
  • He and his company saved the post as Enemy took
    their steps backward.
  • A man who showed ultimate courage and is one of
    the greatest Indian War Heroes. He was awarded
    Param Vir Chakra for his bravery and valour.

Lieutenant-Colonel Dhan Singh Thapa
  • One of the greatest Indian War Heroes who served
    in 1962 War against China.
  • Chinese troop attacked heavily on his company in
    Laddakh region. They were outnumbered but fought
    bravely and held their post.
  • When the Chinese finally overran the post, he
    came out of the post and killed many enemy in
    hand to hand combat.
  • He was captured and later released by Chinese
    army.
  • Colonel Thapa completed his military services
    after being released. He received Param Vir
    Chakra for his bravery and courage.

  • I want to win the Param Vir Chakra. 
  • Thats what was asked to Capt. Manoj Kumar Pandey
    in his SSB interview. And he remained true to his
    word!
  • Part of the 1st Gorkha Rifles, on June 11th, 1999
    during the Kargil War, he led his men to capture
    the Jubar top.
  • Pakistanis fired on Capt. Pandeys men
    demonstrating great daring, he gushed ahead of
    his troop and hailed the enemy with bullets and a
    loud battle cry. Wounded by bullets on leg and
    shoulder, he killed two men in the first bunker
    in hand combat and urged his men to clear all
    bunkers and collapsed in the final bunker.

Brigadier Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri
  • Indian war movie Border was based on the battle
    of Laungewala.
  • On the night of 4th 5th December 1971,
    Brigadier K. S. Chandpuri commandeered his men
    against Pakistani assault formation.
  • He was awarded Maha Vir Chakra for his bravery.

Captain Anuj Nayyar
  • Captain Anuj Nayyar of 17 Jat Regiment bravely
    led his team to capture a mountain peak Pimple
    II that was occupied by Pakistani infiltrators
    during Kargil war in 1999.
  • Captain Nayyar and his team faced steep slopes
    and destroyed many enemy bunkers.
  • He was injured after a grenade directly hit him
    but carried on till his last breath to secure the
    strategic mountain peak.
  • He was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra,
    India's second highest gallantry award.

Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat
  • He was part of 4th Battalion of Garhwal Rifles
    that was subject to repeated assaults by the
    Chinese during 1962 war.
  • He fought bravely and laid down his life as
    supreme sacrifice.
  • A temple called Jaswant Garh has also been
    erected to honour him by troops of his regiment.
  • He was awarded Maha Vir Chakra .

General Arun Shridhar Vaidya
  • He was instrumental in destroying 1st Armoured
    division of Pakistani Army at the battle of
    Chawinda during the war of 1965.
  • He was awarded Maha Vir Chakra for this brave
    act.
  • In 1971 war, he traversed hostile terrain filled
    with mines and moved forward to negate enemy
    attack in the battle of Chakra and Dahira. In the
    battle of Barapind, he commandeered tanks across
    mine fields and received his second Maha Vir
    Chakra .
  • In 1984 he planned operation Blue star to evict
    sikh militants from the Golden temple.

Naik Nand Singh

  • He was member of the 1st Sikh Regiment, in the
    Indian Army during World War II. He was awarded
    the Victoria Cross for his bravery when he led
    his section up a very steep knife-edged ridge
    under very heavy machine-gun and rifle fire and
    although wounded in the thigh, captured the first
    trench. He then crawled forward alone and,
    wounded again in the face and shoulder,
    nevertheless captured the second and third
    trenches.
  • He later achieved the rank of Jemadar in the
    post-independence Indian Army, and his unit 1
    Sikh was the first to be involved in the Jammu
    Kashmir Operations or Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.
  • On 12 December 1947 Nand Singh led his platoon in
    a successful attack to extricate his battalion
    from an ambush in the hills of Uri in Kashmir. He
    was mortally injured and posthumously awarded the
    Maha Vir Chakra, the second-highest Indian
    decoration for battlefield gallantry.
  • The Pakistanis recognised Singh because of his VC
    ribbon. His body was taken Muzaffarabad where it
    was paraded through the city. His body was thrown
    into a garbage dump, and was never recovered

Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla
  • He was the Captain of INS Khukhri during war of
    1971.
  • He died when torpedoes from enemy submarine hit
    his ship.
  • He gave away his own life-saving jacket to a
    sailor and tried to save as many lives as he
    could.
  • He went back to the bridge to see what further
    rescue operations could be performed. He was last
    seen going down with his ship.
  • His brave actions and the example he set were
    recognised by a posthumous award of the Maha Vir
    Chakra.

Colonel Neelakantan Jayachandran Nair
  • Colonel N. J. Nair of 16 Maratha Light Infantry
    was deployed in Nagaland in 1993.
  • On 20th December 1993, his convoy was ambushed by
    Naga rebels. Col N. J. Nair displayed exemplary
    bravery and courage and took on the rebels
    personally in order to break the ambush and save
    his men. He laid down his life during the fight.
  • For his outstanding valour, he was awarded the
    Ashoka Chakra and Kirti Chakra, the only one to
    have won both the prestigious awards.
