Title: Omega 3 and it's Benefits For Cancer Patients

1
Omega 3 and Cancer
2
  • Cancer is formed when there is damage to a cells
DNA. Cancer Cell replicate and build up into a
    mass called a tumor
  • The more the cells replicate they more damaged
they become. Cancer cells are also very adept at
getting nutrients in the body to feed them and
    their growth
  • They do this by produce proteins that create new
blood cells to feed them (known as angiogenesis),
and produce enzymes to keep themselves from
ageing and dying as normal cells do.

3
  • Cancer affects different types of cells around
the body in different way depending on where the
    cancer is
  • For example liver cells are different to a brain
cell, and a skin cell and so on.
  • Some cancers are aggressive, some are slow to
progress, some are hormone sensitive, some are
    not.

4
  • However, cancer cells all have one thing in
common, they all need nutrients. So because our
nutrients come through our diets, what we eat can
    affect them greatly.

Prevention is the Best Cure
  • Inflammation is also closely linked with cancer.
Chronic inflammation has been highlighted as a
causal factor in skin, prostate and colon
cancers, and as research continues we may well
find it affects lots of others types of cancers
    as well

5
  • There is already a huge amount of scientific
research showing the anti-inflammatory effects of
omega 3, (wheras Omega 6 is seen as
    pro-inflammatory
  • A 2011 study found that those people with a
higher omega 63 ratio were at a significantly
higher risk of high-grade prostate cancer. In the
same year another study also showed that
increasing omega 3 prevented non melanoma skin
    cancers by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines
  • A 2015 study showed that omega 3s
    anti-inflammatory effects also extended to
colorectal cancer, and people with diets high in
omega 3 had a much lower risk of developing the
    disease

Reducing the Severity of Cancer
  • A 2012 study showed that renal cancer patients
with lower levels of omega 3 had more aggressive
tumours, and a lower chance of survival
  • However, despite many studies showing the
benefits of omega 3 and cancer, there is one 2013
study that showed that very high levels of omega
3 led to an increased risk of prostate cancer
  • Although this study has been heavily criticised
in the scientific and medical community for not
taking lifestyle and other health factors into
account, such as smoking, drinking, obesity and
    immune system function

8
Omega 3 as an Addition to Standard Cancer
Treatments
  • There are a growing number of studies that show
omega 3 supplementation in addition to standard
treatments can make the treatments more effective
  • A 2015 study showed a decrease in tumor size when
omega 3 supplementation was added to
chemotherapy. The authors of the study concluded
that omega 3 helped the chemotherapy work more
    efficiently

9
  • Similar studies have shown the same effects on
lung cancer and colorectal cancer tumors
  • In breast cancer studies, omega 3 has been shown
to improve the efficiency of anti-estrogens
  • The studies show that adding omega 3 to standard
treatments can make tumors more sensitive to
treatment. It may also lead to doctors using
lower toxic doses of chemotherapy drugs, which
can reduce the long lasting side effect of cancer
treatment, as well as increasing the overall
health of the patient which can only help
    survival rates

10
Improving Cancer patients quality of life
  • We know that chemotherapy is very tough on the
body, and the side effects of cancer treatment
can be severe. Studies have shown that omega 3
can be helpful in reducing these side effects
  • One study showed that omega 3 supplementation led
to a better nutritional status in patients
battling advanced lung cancer. It also helped
them maintain a healthy weight and energy level,
stay in treatment programs longer, and reduced
the severity of other side effects

11
  • Studies on brain cancer have also shown that
omega 3 can help to protect the healthy tissues
surrounding the brain tumours. Treatments for
brain tumours can affect the healthy tissue
surrounding the tumors and lead to permanent
    damage and lower cognitive functioning

Omega 3 - Killing Cancer Cells
  • EPA and DHA are the 2 main omega 3 fatty acids.
Whilst both are beneficial, they have different
effects when it comes to cancer cells

12
  • EPA has been shown to decrease the risk of
prostate tumors spreading. EPA has also been
shown to decrease the size of lung, skin and
    colorectal cancers
  • DHA has been shown to reduce tumor size in
    breast, oral and brain cancers
  • Both EPA and DHA use the same mechanisms to
reduce cancer sizes by reducing their ability to
create new blood cells, and therefore access the
    bodys nutrients
