• Dry eye is very common, painful and very
  irritating. Eye drops can provide temporary
  relief, but are not a cure

• There is a wide variety of causes of dry eye,
  from autoimmune problems, to hormonal changes and
  even certain medications. These causes affect 2
  types of glands. The Lacrimal glands and the
  Meibomian glands

• Although omega 3 deficiency isnt considered to
  be a direct cause, a deficiency in omega 3 does

  for Clinical nutrition found that people who had
  higher rates of intake of omega 3 had a lower
  incidence of dry eye, and those with a lower
  omega 3 intake had a higher incidence of dry eye

• The reason behind this is inflammation. Red and
  puffy eyes are a very common symptom of Dry Eye,
  and omega 3 has long been known to have powerful
  anti-inflammatory effects

• For example, inflammation around the Lacrimal
  glands can damage the glands and reduce tear
  production. A 2011 study showed that this could
  be reversed with omega 3 supplementation. By the
  end of the study 70 of the people involved were
  symptom free

• Inflammation of the Meibomian glands can also
  lead to dry eye symptoms. The inflammation can
  also cause styles and infections that can lead to
  long term damage

• Several studies have shown that supplementing
  with omega 3 can change the composition of the
  Meibomian glands by reducing the saturated fatty
  acid levels, and increasing the unsaturated fatty
  acid levels

• This not only reduces symptoms of dry eye, it
  stops tears evaporating too quickly, and reduced
  the risk of the glands clogging and causing
  permanent damage
