Types of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Belts

White Belts
White belt is the beginning rank for Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu students. This belt is the first level
ranking belt within Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Blue Belts
Blue belt is the second adult rank in the
Brazilian jiu-jitsu. A blue belt level student
must acquire a vast technical knowledge regarding
all aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and hundreds
of hours of mat-time to know how to implement
these moves efficiently.

Purple Belts
A general estimate of the time required to
progress from blue belt to purple belt in most
academies is 2 to 3 years. Purple belt is the
intermediate adult ranking in Brazilian
jiu-jitsu.

Brown Belts
Brown belt is the higher ranking colour belt
after purple belt level in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Brown belt is arguably the beginning of the elite
ranks in and of itself, typically taking at least
5 years of dedicated training to achieve.

Black Belts
The black belt is the next higher ranking level
after brown belt within the art of Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu, denotes an expert level of technical
and practical skill.

Red Belts
Red belt is the highest rank awarded to any
currently living practitioner of Brazilian
jiu-jitsu. The red belt is reserved for those
whose influence and fame takes them to the
pinnacle of the art.
