  • The objective of Unique Identification Authority
    of India (UIDAI) is to survey and collect the
    biometric details and demographic details of the
    resident citizen and create a centralised
    database.
  • Along with this it is also responsible in to
    issue a 12-digit unique identification number to
    each individuals which is called Aadhaar.

  • Any individual of all age groups and any gender
    who lives in India and satisfies the verification
    and enrolment procedure laid down by UIDAI is
    eligible for Aadhar Card.

  • With a budget of Rs 6,678.32 Crore over 100
    Crore Aadhar Cards have been issued throughout
    India till date. Residents who have enrolled
    themselves earlier in National Population
    Register need not have to enrol again under UIDAI
    for Aadhar cards.

    Identification number the Aadhar cards are either
    dispatched by post or click here for downloaded,
    both being equally valid everywhere.
  • This number serves as a proof of identity and
    address to every resident citizens of India,
    throughout India.

  • Some civil liberty groups including Citizens
    Forum for Civil Liberties and Indian Social
    Action Forum (INSAF) have raised voices opposing
    the privacy invasion of the citizens by the
    Aadhaar project.

  • Hence the Supreme Court of India had issued an
    interim order stating that no resident could be
    denied service if he or she does not possess of
    Aadhar Card and in other notice it stated that
    Aadhaar is required for any services except PDS,
    kerosene and LPG distribution system.
