3D METAL PRINTING
  • An Expanding Technology

2
3D Printing Process
What is 3d Printing Technology ?
  • Process of building solid object of any shape
    from a digital model.
  • Also known as additive manufacturign process.
  • Successive layers of material are formed under
    computer control.

First Printing Machine
History of Printing Machines
  • Invented by JOHANNES GUTENBERG.
  • He was a German blacksmith, goldsmith, printer
    and publisher.
  • Gutenberg was the first European to use printing
press and movable type in Europe in 1439.

What is additive manufacturing ?
Additive Manufacturing Method
  • Method is use to build 3d objects.
  • It adds layer upon layer of material
  • Additive manufacturing (AM) method is limitless.
  • The AM equipment reads data from CAD sketch.
  • CAD is a Computer Aided Design.

How does 3D Printing work?
3D Printing
  • The process starts with making the virtual design
of the object to be created.
  • Virtual design are made using CAD.
  • CAD file is made using the 3D scanner.
  • 3D scanner can make 3D digital copy of an object.

3D Printing is done by different methods
Different Methods of 3D Printing
  • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
  • Stereolithography (SLA)
  • Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM)
  • Selective Laser Melting (SLM)

What is SLS ?
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
  • This technique makes use of laser as the source
of power to sinter powdered material.
  • Some SLS machines use single component powder.
  • SLS can produce parts from relatively wide range
as compared to other AM methods.
  • This technology is increasingly being used in
limited run manufacturing to produce end use
    parts.

What is Stereolithography ?
Stereolithography (SLA)
  • It is also known as Optical Fabrication
  • SLA is a additive manufacturing technology.
  • Used for creating model, prototype, patterns etc.
  • It is early and widely used 3d printing
    technology.

Stereolithography

What is FDM 3D Printing?
Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM)
  • It is most widely used 3D printing method.
  • FDM printers uses thermoplastic filament.
  • The filament is heated to its melting point and
    then it is extruded.
  • The obove process is done to produce 3
    dimentional objects.

What is SLM ?
Selective Laser Melting (SLM)
  • This process uses 3D CAD data as a digital
    information source.
  • It is used in manufacturing appications in
    aerospace or medical orthpedics.
  • The process starts by slicing the 3D CAD file
    data into layers.
  • SLM is sometimes also referred to as rapid
    manufacturng
