What You Need to Know About Swimming Pool Patio
Cracks
2
There are many homeowners that have spent their
time and cash to create swimming pool patios in
order to enhance their outdoor living experience
and they keep wondering whether the concrete will
ever crack the truth is that the swimming pool
concrete can and will crack. However, you need
to know what causes the swimming pool concrete to
crack and whether there is anything you can do
about it as a homeowner. Read on if you want to
understand this seemingly contrary characteristic
of swimming pool concrete.
3
It is important to note that there are different
types of cracks that can occur in swimming pool
concrete some of the most common examples
include structural cracks, shrinkage cracks,
freeze cracks or those cracks that are the result
of a poor mix of concrete which is otherwise
known as product failure.
4
Of all this types of cracks that on swimming pool
patio, shrinkage cracks are the most annoying
ones because they basically are not the result of
human error and as a result they are likely to
affect just about everyone. You must therefore be
interested in knowing what exactly causes this
type of crack in your swimming pool concrete.
5
You will remember that swimming pool concrete is
normally poured and placed in a fluid state
there is a chemical reaction that occurs during
and after finishing between the water and the
cement which causes the concrete to harden. As
the concrete continues to harden it cures and
water gets consumed with the result being a loss
in volume. This loss in volume will cause the
concrete to shrink at a rate of close to
one-sixteenth of an inch for every ten feet the
swimming pool concrete will generally pull apart
as this is taking place. The resultant effect
therefore is that you are going to have a crack
on the concrete at every ten to twelve feet.
6
This type of crack occurs after the swimming pool
concrete has been poured anywhere beginning from
the same day even though it could even come so
many months down the road. When they occur, these
cracks will usually run the entire section of the
concrete most pool owners wonder whether there
is anything they can ever do to manage this
predicament.
7
If you want to save the face of your swimming
pool patio, you need to learn how to control
these cracks. This controlling will require that
your contractor scores the concrete in some
strategic places in order to weaken it and force
the inevitable crack to occur within a pretty
thin line. The joints will be installed by either
cutting the concrete using a saw once it has set
or by using hand tooling as the concrete is being
finished.
