Title: Protein and Weight Loss: Is There a Connection?

1
Protein and Weight Loss Is There a Connection?
2
  • Protein seems to take center stage when it comes
to dieting these days. With introduction of
higher protein diets, carbohydrates and good fats
seem to be a thing of the past. Protein based
diets are popping up everywhere such as the South
Beach diet and Atkins. But is there really a
connection between protein and weight loss?
  • Here are some truths behind protein and weight
    loss

3
Protein Helps Suppress your Appetite
  • Research studies show that protein actually helps
you lose body weight by decreasing your desire
for food. Eating a diet that contains more than
enough protein satiates your hunger and because
you feel full you won't crave for any more food
    over the next several hours.

4
  • The different protein diets in the market such as
the Atkins Diet advocates that protein intake to
be more than twice as much of what the American
    Dietetic Association recommends.

Protein Speeds Metabolism and Burns More Body Fat
  • There is research based evidence to suggest that
this is true. In one particular study, two groups
of people were given varying levels of protein in
their meals. One group was given one gram of
protein for every pound of body weight.

7
  • The other group was given the amount as
prescribed in their respective Recommended Daily
Allowance (RDA). At the end of the study, it was
found out that the group that consumed more
protein was able to burn more body fat.
Researchers attributed this result to be the
thermogenic effect of proteins i.e the ability to
produce heat and hence burn caloric energy.

8
Protein Increases Muscle Mass
  • This is the main reason why protein is the
favourite nutrient of body builders. But it can
help those that want to lose weight as well? With
the right amount protein in the body, muscles
fibers are increased and fat is burned
    considerably.

9
  • This is because protein delivers the energy that
the body needs to perform exercises and other
physical activities. Without protein, the body
becomes sluggish and the person feels tired more
often. However, if you don't move much, fats
won't get burned. The evidence supporting the
link between protein and weight loss is extremely
high and simply foolish to ignore.

Protein Triggers the Functions of a Natural
Weight Loss Hormone
  • A U.K study indicates that a certain hormone
called Peptide YY (PYY) produced by the stomach
is triggered when enough protein is consumed. PYY
is a hormone made in the small intestine which
helps reduce appetite and limit food intake.

12
  • This hormone is said to be the cure for obesity
and strongly supports the link between protein
and weight loss. Further research involving PYY
    is indicated.

13
  • So there you have it! These are the facts behind
protein and weight loss. Protein is definitely a
good nutrient for the body and along with fruits,
vegetables good fats and carbohydrates. However,
it is best to consult with a qualified health
professional before embarking on a higher protein
    diet of your own.
