  an employee and the people they work for. But
  theyre also a fact of life. While you may not be

  take a drug test is when interviewing for a job.
  For some industries, such as aviation,
  transportation, safety and defense,
  pre-employment drug tests are mandatory. Even if
  its not a legal requirement, other industries
  may ask for a drug test before officially hiring
  a candidate.

• If youve been involved in a workplace accident,
  even one that didnt cause injuries, a drug test
  is likely to follow. In many cases, this is a
  legal requirement, especially if workers
  compensation claims are involved.

• If youve left work because of an accident or
  because youve taken a long period of leave, you
  may be asked to take a drug test before you
  resume your duties. Not all employers drug test
  returning employees, but many do, especially
  after an accident or medical incident.

• Another time to expect a drug test at work is if
  you are returning from work after a suspension,
  especially if that suspension was because of
  testing positive for a previous drug test. Until
  youve tested clean, you probably wont be able
  to return to work.

• Employers can also drug test their employees if
  they have a reasonable suspicion that they are
  intoxicated or using illegal substances. These
  kind of tests can be hard to predict, but if you
  believe your supervisor is suspicious of your
  behavior, it may be a sign he or she will ask you
  to take a drug test.

• In some cases, employers schedule drug tests for
  their employees on a regular basis. These
  periodic tests happen on a regular schedule, and
  can easily be predicted, as long as you remember
  when your next test period is.

• As the name implies, random testing is just that
  random. Unfortunately, theres no real way to
  prepare for these kinds of tests. While you will
  sometimes be given a few days notice before the
  scheduled test date, random tests are designed to
  give as little advanced warning as possible.
