5Hazara Rama Temple The most outstanding feature
of this temple are its walls which feature carved
images that depict scenes for the Ramayana that
forms an essential part of Hindu mythology. They
can be found etched in length arrays all over the
walls. Sacred Center The oldest and most
important temple in the area is the Virupaksha
temple in Hampi. It is located along the south
bank of the river Tungabhadra and is considered
to be an important pilgrimage destination for
devotees of Lord Shiva. Apart from the large
crowd of pilgrims it is also popular with
tourists. Its annual festival attracts very large
crowds.
6Achyuta Raya Temple It was constructed in 1534,
and features the medieval Vijayanagara style of
temple architecture. It is one of the grandest
examples of this style of architecture to be
found anywhere else in Hampi. This was to be out
of the last magnificent temple projects to be
carried out in the capital before the empire
collapsed. Hampi Bazaar The bazaar is also
known as Virupaksha Bazaar, and is on a street
that is situated at the front of the Virupaksha
temple. It stretches for about a kilometre in
length with the east end of the temple ending at
the base of the Matanga Hill. Visitors will find
that both the sides of the street are have a
number of old pavilions that are linked, with
some being two storied. It is said that these
ancient structures once belonged to a flourishing
market and also was the residence of the
nobility.
7Sasivekalu Ganesha This temple is to be found at
the southern base of the Hemakuta hill. It
contains a massive Ganesha statue that is known
locally as Sasivekalu (mustard seed).
Courtesans' Street It was deemed to be the
liveliest of all streets in Hampi, with the
Courtesans' Street located in front of Achyuta
Rayas Temple. When you enter the area you will
see scores of ornately carved pillars that are to
be found on both sides of the street. It is said
that these grand pillars once belonged to the
pavilions that were found on both sides of the
street.
