Sea Caves of St Kilda North Rona
In the summer of 2015 I joined my
friend/colleague Richard Shucksmith, along with a
team of researchers fromHeriot Watt University,
on a 3-week expedition to some of Britains most
remote islands, St. Kilda to the west of the
Hebrides and North Rona to the north. Id spent a
week or so diving North Rona a few years ago but
never had the chance to visit St. Kilda. There
are few places on the UK dive map with such a
reputation. Remote and often inaccessible, the
distant archipelago has attained an iconic status
among UK divers, its name often spoken with
reverence by the lucky few who have had the
opportunity to visit.

Yorkshire Nature Triangle Last year I was
commissioned by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to
make a short film for the Yorkshire Nature
Triangle. Established in 2010 the Nature Triangle
is a series of reserves in the counties of North
Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, in
the north of England, UK. It is bounded by the
east coast from Filey Brigg in the north all the
way down past Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea
to the 3.5 mile narrow peninsula at Spurn Point
then by North Cave, the Yorkshire Wolds and the
River Hull catchment to the west and by the
Humber tidal estuary to the south.

Myanmar Giving Fishers a Voice
As part of my work with the Smithsonian Marine
Conservation Program I had the opportunity to
visit Myanmar last year. I spent most of my time
in a small fishing community near Dawei on the
southwest coast.

Above Filey Brigg
While some parts of the country have been
moaning, as the English love to do, about having
a typical UK summer (i.e. it rained a bit now
again) the Yorkshire coast has seen some of the
most consistently good weather for the last 5 or
so years. Although Ive not managed to get out as
much as usual due to having a new baby arrive on
24th June, Ive had the occasional outing, this
trip being the most memorable of the last few
weeks. Id be on the coast the day before and
noticed that the North Sea was unusually clear
and so started making all sorts of photographic
plans to take advantage of it, as it doesnt
happen very often. The first plan was to get the
drone in the air and see what all this looked
like from above, and where better to fly than off
the end of Filey Brigg. Ive done this a few
times but never in such great conditions.

British Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2016
2016 has been quite a good competition year for
me what with various images doing well in
the Scottish Nature Photography Awards, the Food
Photographer of the Year (an odd one I know) and
the Underwater Photographer of the Year. However,
the other day I found out I was recently selected
as overall winner of British Wildlife
Photographer of the Year 2016 with my photo of a
lions mane jelly fish (taken whilst working at
St Kilda). All I can say is its really a
surprise and honour to be selected among so many
high quality entries. The image was also selected
as winner of the Coast Marine category.
