ELECTROPLATING
Gold plating is the process of coating the
surface of another metal with gold to enhance its
appearance. This process is commonly used by
goldsmiths for making gold jewellery. The
following points will briefly explain how gold
plating is done in a step-by-step manner.

SURFACE CLEANING
The surface of the base metal used is cleaned of
dirt and other surface impurities by using
abrasives, solvents, acid cleaners, etc. After
this, the surface is inspected for any remaining
contaminants.

FINAL PLATING
After carefully rinsing with water to remove
solvents, a thin strike layer is applied to the
base metal. This layer can improve bonding
between the base metal and gold plating. The
layer prohibits contamination of tanks used in
plating process.

SURFACE CLEANING
The base metal item is attached to a
negatively-charged cathode and is dipped in a
positively charged solution containing gold ions.
Due to the charge difference, the gold ions are
attracted towards the base metal and get applied
as a layer on their surface. The plating process
can be repeated in multiple cycles to get a
smoother finish.
