Title: How oils help reduce cholesterol
1(No Transcript)
2A simple understanding of essential fatty acids
and what is cholesterol and how to reduce
cholesterol with foods and their sources.
3- How oils help reduce cholesterol
The body can synthesize most of the fats it needs
from the diet. However, essential fatty acids
cannot be synthesized in the body and must be
obtained from food.
4These basic fats, found in plant and animal
foods, are used to build specialized fats called
omega-3. Omega-3 is important in the normal
functioning of all tissues of the body.
5Foods rich in essential fatty acids and other
vital nutrients are healthy foods. The biggest
source of omega 3 fatty acids which comprise of
sea fish such as tuna, sardines, cod fish, salmon
and halibut and also other sea foods like crab,
lobsters. Cod liver oil is perhaps the most
important and well known source.
6The plant sources, the most important sources are
walnuts, soy foods, pumpkin seeds and rapeseed
oil along with dark green, fresh leafy vegetables
such as spinach and lettuce which are also high
in omega 3 fats. Eggs and various dairy products
like peanut butter which are readily available
around us, for your daily dose of healthy foods.
7Cholesterol is a compound of the sterol found in
body tissues. Cholesterol and its derivatives are
important constituents of cell membranes and
precursors of other steroid compounds, but their
high concentrations in the blood are thought to
promote a number of anomalies in the human body.
8The reduction in plasma lipids (especially
triglycerides) produced by consuming Omega-3 is
one of the effects for which there is most
evidence in both humans and animals.
9- Fish oils have been shown to reduce plasma
cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations,
inhibiting the biosynthesis of very-low-density
lipoproteins and triglycerides in the liver,
while slightly increasing that of high-density
lipoproteins..
10- Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty
acids help lower cholesterol. Most plant-derived
oils, including canola, safflower, sunflower,
olive, grape seed, and peanut oils, contain both.
Fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, trout, herring,
and mackerel), seeds, nuts, avocados and soybeans
are also great sources. Various dairy products
are now fortified with omega 3 fatty acids which
help to reduce cholesterol.
