Cervical Discectomy
2
What is Cervical Discectomy
  • The spine is a soft spongy rod like structure
which runs the entire length of your back and is
the second largest coordinating center of your
body with lots of neural tissue and several
nerves and blood vessels. Your spine is protected
by a hard bony structure called backbone. The
backbone is made up of small segments called
vertebrae which enable you to move, and are held
together with the help of cartilaginous tissue.
The tissue present between two adjacent vertebrae
forms the disk or cushion between them and allow
you to move as desired. When there is some extra
growth or degeneration of this tissue, your
doctor needs to perform a discectomy to help you
    live a more normal life.

3
Before the Procedure
  • The cervical area refers to the neck region of
your body. Your doctor needs to perform several
diagnostic tests to determine the exact cause of
your discomfort. If your doctor finds that there
is herniation of the disk, meaning that there is
extra growth of the tissue that is compressing or
putting pressure on your spine, they will suggest
you to undergo cervical discectomy. Your doctor
will ask you about your medical history and will
do the required blood tests and various other
preparations for the surgery. You need to go for
the surgery with an empty stomach. Your doctor
might even ask you to bathe with an antibiotic
soap to lower the risk of infection.

How it is performed
5
How It Is Performed
To perform the procedure, your surgeon will make
an incision in your neck along the natural crease
line. After reaching the desired vertebra your
doctor will dissect the disk and will remove the
nucleus of the disk. After that has been removed
your doctor will also remove the tissue of the
disc, this helps in releasing the pressure from
your spine. After the damaged disks have been
removed the Doctor will remove or scrape out some
more bone tissue to make place for the cushion
grafts to support and maintain adequate gap
between vertebrae. After securing the grafts in
place the vertebrae will be locked in desired or
correct fashion with help of a metal plate and
screws. The incision is then closed and bandage
is applied. Similar procedures are done to
replace any other disk of the spine, it could
lumbar area (lower back) or thoracic area (area
behind the lungs or thoracic cavity)
6
Recovery
  • You will be required to wear a neck collar for
couple of weeks after the surgery. This is
required to keep the movement minimum and to
allow the implants to settle in your body. You
might feel a highly swollen throat after the
surgery and will be on liquid and soft diet for
initial days. After the collar has been removed
you will be asked to start with normal and basic
exercise like nodding your head to gain the
    movements again.

7
Potential Risks
The procedure is typically risk free. An
experienced surgeon can efficiently manage to
protect important blood vessels. Damage to the
spine has been reported in very less number of
cases. You should prevent the wound from contact
with water or moisture as it can develop
infection.
