Six Facts About Varicose Veins
  • While wearing shorts, many people are concerned
about how their legs look are they too white,
too hairy, too flabby? However, while examining
the color and shapeliness of your legs, you may
notice a couple of purple-colored veins winding
around. No, those are not worms that have taken
up residency in your legs, instead they are known
    as varicose veins.
  • The book, Say Goodbye to Varicose and Spider
Veins Now!, states that this condition affects
more than 80 million American adults. Now thats
a pretty serious condition, demanding some
serious thoughts. So its time to share a few
    facts related to varicose veins.

3
Fact 1 Neither crossing your legs for a longer
period of time nor wearing stilettos or other
high-heeled footwear causes varicose veins
  • "These are just old wives' tales," quips Luis
Navarro, MD, whos the medical director and the
founder The Vein Treatment Center in NYC. This
condition is caused by pooling of blood, which is
a common problem caused by prolonged sitting or
standing. And as Dr. Navarro notes, other causes
of this condition include smoking, obesity,
hormonal birth control and lack of exercise.

4
Fact 2 This condition is way more than a mere
cosmetic woe
  • Varicose veins, if ignored, will cause serious
health issues. Dr. Navarro explains these veins
cause fatigue in the legs along with general
discomfort and swelling. He adds that these vines
can be an indication to a lot of serious,
    long-term medical conditions including blood
clots, leg swelling, poor circulation and deep
vein thrombosis. So consider getting a varicose
veins treatment if your legs start to feel sore
and really heavy whenever a day filled with a lot
    of physical activities ends.

5
Fact 3 This condition is definitely genetic
  • The condition of varicose veins is genetic, but
dont jump the gun by blaming one of your
parents. According to several leading researchers
and doctors, you can easily inherit the
tendencies from both sides of your family and
    even from your previous generations.

6
Fact 4 Varicose veins and spider veins arent
two sides of the same coin
  • While they look similar, the two conditions are
quite different. Spider veins are usually
harmless, thin, small blue-blood vessels, which
are visible under the skin, and counted as a
symptom of varicose vein formation and poor
circulation. Whereas, varicose veins are thick
and have a ropey look protruding out of your
legs, stretched-out veins having pooled blood,
and occurring whenever one-way valves arent
    working the way they should.
  • Garth Rosenberg, a vascular surgeon in Capitol
Vein and Laser Center in Frederick, MD, explains,
"It's not uncommon to have varicose and spider
    veins in one leg."

7
Fact 5 This condition is common in not only
females but also males
  • Experts say that from 70 to 80 percent of cases
of varicose veins include females. However, that
doesnt mean males are spared from this
condition. They can suffer from a lot of venous
diseases, but the chances of them seeking
    treatments are very low.

Fact 6 Sometimes pregnancy brings varicose veins
  • The author of Say Goodbye to Varicose and Spider
Veins Now!, Dr. Greg Martin, explains that
pregnancy often causes high pressure against
inferior vena cavathats the chief vein, which
is supposed to drain the blood from a bodys
lower half. Also, in certain body positions, the
fetus can block the blood flow causing varicose
    veins.
  • Further, an expectant mothers body secretes a
lot of hormones during this phase this excessive
hormonal production in the body can cause veins
smooth muscles to relax. With such relaxing of
muscles, either the veins storage capacity or
their propensity to dilate is increased.
    Remember Anything that increases abdominal
pressure in a body can lead to varicose veins.
Thats why obesity is also one of the main
    reasons why this condition happens.
