4Creating custom site templates
- Custom site templates can be created with the
user interface or using object model. - Creating custom site templates are as follows
- After creating SharePoint site, click on Site
settings in the share point tab settings. - Click on "Save site as template.
- Give a filename and a name to the site template
and check "Include content" if you want to
include the content of the site. - The custom site template is created and available
in the gallery of solutions from the parent site.
5Comparison Site Definition Site Template
- Site definition is a combination of multiple
files. - Ex .xml, .aspx, .ascx, and .master page, .gif ,
.doc etc - Site Templates are created from an existing site
and are stored in Content database. - Can download templates and use them other site
collection to create a new site. - Can create multiple site using single site
template, and making changes in one site does not
Impact other sites. - Once site is created, developers can not apply
the changes those if required.

require use of site definitions.
7Managing Site Definition with Master Pages
- Master pages provides interface and layout of the
pages on a Share point site. - master page displays the persistent elements to
navigate one page to another page on SharePoint
site. - Master pages define the shared framing elements
for all pages in your site. - Page layouts define the layout for a specific
class of pages. - Pages are created from a page layout by authors
who add content to page fields. - Also defines regions called content placeholders.
8Creating a site on Custom Site Definition
- Creating a custom Site Definition is follows as
- Download or copy an existing Site Definition
folder located in the  Local Drive \
ProgramFiles\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web
server extensions \12\ TEMPLATE \Site
Templates\Â directory. - Create or copy WEBTEMP XML fragment file located
in Local_Drive\Program Files\ Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\web server
extensions\12\TEMPLATE\1033\XML to register the
site definition with SharePoint.
9Creating a site on Custom Site Definition
- Give the file a unique name by appending a string
to the name of the original file. - Customize the contents of the new WebTemp file.
- Each WebTemp.xml file contains a collection
of Template elements and Configuration
subelements. - Create a site using the custom site definition.
Follow the below steps to create a site - Open Internet Explorer, navigate to a SharePoint
site on the server where you performed the steps
above.
10Creating a site on Custom Site Definition
- Click the Site Actions menu, Select New Site.
- Click the Custom Site Definitions tab on the left
side of the create a site dialog to see the new
site templates you registered with the SAMPLE
site definition. - Select one of the sample site templates you
created. - Enter a title and URL and Click the Create button
and your new SharePoint site is created.
