Types of molly
6
Introduction
  • The wild-type fish are a dull silvery color,
    often sprinkled black all over.
  • The common molly can produce fertile hybrids with
many Poecilia species, most importantly the sail
    fin molly.

7
  • The male black mollies generally tend to be
    mildly aggressive.
  • Mollies rank as one of the most popular feeder
fish due to high growth rate, birth size,
    reproduction, and brood number.

8
Gender identification
  • Males are more slender.
  • Females more round.
  • Males also have a modified anal fin.

9
Gender identification
  • The most accurate way is to examine the anal fin.
  • Those possessing fanlike anal fins are females.
  • The anal fins of males are highly modified.
  • The males transfer sperm to the females by using
    anal fin.

10
Feeding
  • Mollies are omnivores.
  • Feed on
  • Invertebrates
  • Plant matter
  • Detritus in the wild

11
Feeding in the aquarium
  • Fed a high quality flake food, along with regular
    feedings.
  • Vegetables are absolutely essential to a mollies
    health.
  • Similar tastes in frozen foods.

12
Favorite live foods
  • Mosquito larvae
  • Bloodworms
  • Black worms
  • Daphnia
  • Brine shrimp

13
Breeding
  • Internal fertilization and gestation.
  • The male has a modified anal fin called a
    gonopodium.
  • During mating, the male inserts the gonopodium
into the female's urogenital opening and deposits
    sperm.
  • Before mating, the fish engage in a mating ritual
  • involving fin displays.

14
Breeding
  • The ideal combination of male and female fish is
    one male for multiple females.

15
Breeding
Spawning molly
Separating fry from adults using contraptions
16
Caring fry and fingerlings after hatchery
  • Use contraptions in aquariums
  • Aquarium Net Breeder
  • (It has a thin frame made of plastic that's
covered with a fine net to separate the babies
inside the net from the larger fish outside the
    net.)

17
  • Net breeder made of solid plastic
  • (has an upper space for the female and second
    space below for fry.)

18
Different body colors of mollies
  • Mollies come in a range of colors like black,
orange and white and also come in various spotted
    colorations.

19
Culture
  • Brief description of Molly
  • Size 2 to 4 inches (5 - 10 cm) depending on the
    species
  • Life Span 3 - 5 years
  • Molly Fish Temperament / Behavior Peaceful
  • Origin / Habitat Central America

20
Culture
  • Brief description of needed Aquarium
  • Aquarium Size about 29 gallon minimum, prefer
    tall aquariums
  • Molly Tank Mates Not many - some feel
  • they should
    only be kept
  • with others of
    the same

  • species.
  • Tank Region All over the tank.

21
Culture
  • Brief description of needed environmental
    conditions
  • pH 7.5 - 8.5
  • Temperature 21C - 28C
  • Water Hardness 10 to 25 dH

22
Culture
  • Housing
  • Mollies can be sensitive to poor water
    conditions.
  • They should be provided with a spacious aquarium
which allows for more stable water parameters.

23
Culture
  • Housing
  • The minimum tank size for a small group of
mollies is 29 gallons (110 liters).
  • Minimum tank size rises to 45 gallons (170
liters) if the fry allow to grown to reasonable
    size.

24
Culture
  • Housing
  • Its important to maintains a very strict ratio
    of the sexes.
  • There should be at least two females for every
    male.
  • The reasons for this ratio is that males
relentlessly attempt to mate with females, and by
providing more females, you ensure that no one
female receives all of the males attention.

25
Plants used in small aquariums for molly
  • It is generally recommended that any tank
    containing mollies be heavily planted.
  • The adult mollies will appreciate the planted
    environment.
  • More importantly, the plants will help with the
    fry survival rate.

26
Plants used in small aquariums for molly
  • Some easy to care for plants that you can add to
    a mollies tank are
  • Amazon sword plants.
  • hygrophila polysperma.
  • Java ferns.
  • Java moss.
