Passive House Design and Normal Home Design

  • The passive house design is getting more and more
popular these days. This type of house design
takes advantage of the climatic features in
maintaining a thermally comfortable home. Passive
houses are generally cheaper to run since energy
consumption for heating and cooling is greatly
reduced. But what makes a passive house different
    from a normal residential house?
  • A passive house design and a normal residential
building design differ from one another in
various ways. Let us see what makes a passive
design different from the residential design.

Shading
  • One great feature of a passive design which is
often absent in many normal designs is its
shading. Adding shading both to the outdoor
spaces and the main residential building reduces
the heat received by its occupants during the
summer season by up to 90 percent. Effective
shading helps improve thermal comfort inside the
house and it likewise helps save energy by
eliminating or reducing the need for auxiliary
cooling. An outstanding fixed shading location
can block the sun's heat during summer but can
allow the sun to pass through during winter.

Proper Insulation
  • Proper insulation can help maintain a
    comfortable indoor temperature. Insulation blocks
heat flow. It can help keep the entire house cool
in summer and warm in winter. Passive houses are
designed and built with an insulation that is
appropriate to the local climatic conditions.
Passive houses are also constructed to provide an
    all year-round thermal comfort. A well-designed
and well-insulated home does not only help reduce
heating and cooling bills, but it also cuts down
    greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Passive houses are specially designed with an
orientation that takes advantage of the local
climatic features like the cooling breezes and
sun. House orientation means how you position the
house on its specific site with the local
climatic features in mind. For instance, houses
built in areas with tropical climates are facing
north to allow maximum sun exposure as well as
easy windows and walls shading in summer.
  • With the correct orientation, the need of the
house for auxiliary cooling and heating is
greatly reduced, making it cheaper to run and at
the same time thermally comfortable all
    throughout the year.
