The RBT Training Requirement
RBT Training
RBT Online courses that can be completed anytime,
anywhere. This preparation program depends on the
Registered Behavior Technician Task List and is
intended to meet the 40-hour preparing necessity
for the RBT qualification. The program is offered
autonomous of the BACB.
A RBT is a paraprofessional who hones under the
supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. The RBT's
essential duty is the immediate usage of
treatment arrangements created by the director.s

RBT Credential
The RBT credential requires applicants to
meet minimum age and education standards, obtain
40 hours of acceptable training, successfully
complete a competency assessment, and a criminal
background check.
1. Age and Education
RBT applicants must be at least 18 years of age
and have demonstrated completion of high school
or equivalent/higher.

2. Training Requirement
The assessment must be administered by a BACB
certificant following completion of the 40-hour
training requirement. The assessment must have
been completed no longer than 90 days prior to
applying.
The 40-hour RBT training is not provided by the
BACB but, rather, is developed and conducted by
BACB certificants. The applicant will need to
locate and enroll in a training program. RBT
training may not begin until the applicant is at
least 18 years of age and has completed the
education requirement (e.g., high school) stated
above
3. The RBT Competency Assessment
The RBT Competency Assessment is the basis for
the key eligibility and renewal requirements for
the RBT credential.

4. Criminal Background Registry Check
To the extent permitted by law, a criminal
background check and abuse registry check shall
be conducted on each RBT applicant no more than
180 days prior to submitting an application.
Where available, a Responsible Certificant who
holds a BACB credential shall confirm that the
applicant has successfully completed a criminal
background check comparable to that commonly
required for those working as home health aides,
child care professionals and/or teachers in the
community where services will be provided.

The Responsible Certificant is not required to
review the background or registry report, if such
review is conducted internally by the agency
employing the applicant. The supervisor must
attest to the following statement
I have confirmed, as the Responsible Certificant,
the applicants compliance with the Criminal
Background Registry Check required by the BACB.
In my professional opinion and to the best of my
knowledge, the applicants history did not reveal
a matter that would preclude employment as an RBT.
