Title: Internal Medicine Residency Requirements for Top Programs

1
Internal Medicine Residency Requirements for Top
Programs
2
What does residency mean?
  • IM Residency means a stage of medical training
for graduated students so later they become
physicians who practice medicine in a hospital or
    clinic. Accredited residency program allows
getting an unrestricted license so a person can
work as a doc in many jurisdictions.

3
When applying for the program, you are required
to prepare
  • Common Application Form (CAF)
  • Personal statement
  • 3-4 letters of recommendation
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE,
also known as Dean's letter which is a summary of
    applicants medical education)
  • Official medical school transcripts
  • Internal medicine CV

4
  • First of all, students are required to register
with the National Resident Matching Program
(NRMP). It matches applicants and residency
    programs taking into account individual
    preferences.

5
  • One of the main internal medicine residency
requirements is that students need to apply
    through the Electronic Residency Application
Service (ERAS). It is an online application tool
that transfers all applicants package of
required documents from students and medical
schools to residency in internal medicine.

6
Applying for Residency
  • Applicants are required to write a personal
statement. It is an essay of persons strengths
and experiences, accomplishments and interest in
the particular training program. Write not only
one personal statement for all specialties you
are applying for. For each program, you should
prepare a unique, informative and convincing
    writing.

7
  • It will be perfect if youll ask for feedbacks on
    your internal medicine residency personal
statement from tutors, advisors or even friends
so they would suggest how to improve your writing.

8
In your personal statement
  • Describe your personality, passions and
    aspirations.
  • Define all reasons why youve chosen a particular
    specialty.
  • Show what you can contribute to that field.

9
  • Dont forget to include your clinical work,
research that youve conducted or even life
experience only if its relevant. Make sure your
internal medicine residency personal statement is
readable and engaging, flows smoothly and
    logically.

10
Applicants are also required to provide a letter
of recommendation
  • A majority of residency programs requires 3-4
letters of recommendation. They shouldnt be
generic, poorly written and weak. You need to
find a person who is knowledgeable in medicine
and is able to write a strong, positive and
    supportive internal medicine letter of
    recommendation.

11
  • Each program has specific requirements. However,
the most winning are usually letters written by
attending physicians. Nevertheless, ask for help
from those who know you well as well as your
    academic performance, experience, unique
    qualities and positive sides.

12
  • You are required to get 1 or 2 letters from a
faculty member of the specialty that youre
applying. Actually, letters are allowed to be
    written by professionals from different
specialties, not only from those that youve
    chosen.

13
  • If you have some experience outside of the
    clinical field such as volunteering,
international work, research or special clinical
experience, ask professionals who have worked
closely with you and care about your medical
career to write a letter of recommendation
    internal medicine for you.

14
  • A letter full of generalities wont be successful
for sure. To help your writers, give them
examples of your achievements, abilities and
skills so they will be able to support their
    statements with real facts.

15
Next requirement - well-written and clear
internal medicine residency CV
  • CV is a document which includes all your academic
    background, medical and research accomplishments,
    employment history, activities, publications,
awards, grants and fellowships. Internal medicine
residency CV is a summary of persons experience
    and skills.

16
Next required step - interviewing for residency
  • It starts as soon as you make contact with chosen
    program. Stay calm, genuine, patient,
enthusiastic and respectful. Do not nervous!
  • Before the interview, conduct a little research
about the residency program so you can ask
    questions about the institution, staff,
    accommodations, etc.

17
  • You are welcome to communicate with current
residents whove already got through internal
medicine residency application process and ask
    them questions as well.
